General Definition and Scope of Job

Individual having specific, well-defined skills and knowledge in Emergency Medicine, one who is concerned for the
health and wellbeing of others and who exercises in their daily work attention to all assigned tasks in order to promote
the wellbeing of others.

What are the Minimum Skills, Experience, and Educational Requirements for an EMT?

1. Possess a valid State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician license.
2. Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s license that meets the following guidelines:

  • Violations – No more than two in the last three years and one/or one in the last 12 months. This does not
    include violations for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, license suspension, negligent driving.
    Violations of this type will typically make the driver unacceptable.
  • Accidents – No more than one in the last three years and none in the previous 12 months. Accident
    means an occurrence resulting in bodily injury, death or property damage for which the vehicle operator
    was found liable.
  • Combined – No more than one violation in the last three years and one accident in the three years but not
    in the previous 12 months.

3. Personality qualities of kindness, patience, and tact in dealing with others.
4. Ability to carry through tasks with minimum supervision and deal with emergency situations carefully, calmly and efficiently.
5. Current BLS card certificate of attendance or certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment with NOCHS.
6. Ability to read, write and speak English effectively.

  2. Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s license that meets the following guidelines:

  6. Current ACLS, ITLS/PHTLS, PALS certificate of attendance or certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment with NOCHS.
  7. Completion of the WMRMCC Enhanced Paramedic Interfacility Care (EPIC) online education certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment with NOCHS. The practical education to be determined by EMS management. This is required for all full-time and part-time paramedics.
  8. Ability to read, write and speak English effectively.

What are the Critical Demands of the Job?

1. Ability to manage multiple types of communication equipment.
2. Ability to lift patients in and out of buildings and ambulance.
3. Ability to hear radio communications and assess patients with the use of a stethoscope – vitals, lungs, ABD sounds.
4. Performs or assists nursing units as requested within the scope of a BLS provider and other duties as outlined in orientation.

What are the Working Conditions?

1. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illness).
2. Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases.
3. Exposed to traffic and safety hazards, adverse weather conditions, hazardous terrain, construction sites, water rescues, etc.
4. Unpredictable mealtimes. Breaks and lunches are scheduled around patient needs.
5. Maybe working with a patient up to 500 + pounds.
