Emergency Communications Operator Trainee PT

The Town of Farmville is accepting applications for a part-time Communication Operator Trainee. This is an entry-level position that requires a basic dispatch certification within one year of hire. Certified candidates are also encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and deal with the public under stressful conditions. Familiarity with the Town of Farmville and surrounding areas is a plus.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Receive and transmit messages, primarily by radio; maintain radio log
• Receive complaints in person or by phone
• Receive emergency calls, determine location and nature of emergency, and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment
• Monitor teletype traffic, send teletype messages, and maintain teletype log
• Monitor primary and secondary police frequencies and emergency frequencies
• Dispatch responders where and when needed
• Take phone calls concerning complaints, pass information on to appropriate unit, and make record of calls
• Make VCIN queries to include criminal background checks
• Receive/monitor business, residential, and Longwood door alarms
• Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements – High School Diploma or GED

Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check (including driving record check) and a substance abuse screening.

Salary: $16.87 per hour (higher for certified dispatchers).
