The Embedded Simulation Participant (ESP) role serves as a person who portrays a nurse in a simulated clinical environment. This role will be pivotal in facilitating interprofessional education by engaging in simulation-based learning activities for healthcare professionals.Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
  • ADN or BSN in nursing
  • 1-3 year's work experience in applicable clinical nursing role. Current RN licensure not required.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 - 3 years of acute care, or ICU clinical nursing experience
  • Other relevant clinical work experience related to specific simulation course content (OB, surgery, neurology, etc.)
  • Work experience in healthcare simulation and/or adult education
  • Desire to develop simulation knowledge and expertise
  • Competent with Microsoft Office programs
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous learning, and staying updated with best practices in simulation education

Job Duties Outlined:
  • Participate in training specific to each case to develop a complete understanding of the learning objectives and expected learner outcomes. Assist with training of standardized patients for case specific roles.
  • Fulfill the role of the nurse in assigned simulation cases/events. Interacts with learners while assessing and caring for patients and their loved ones as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Maintains working knowledge of basic medical equipment utilized in simulation.
  • Provide guidance, support, and direction to learners to assist them in completing the expected learner outcomes for each case.
  • Actively participates as a collaborative member of the Simulation Center team.
  • Integrate clinical expertise and evidence-based practice to create immersive learning experiences for healthcare professionals.
  • Navigate a dynamic and complex work environment with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Hold professionalism towards your fellow co-workers, supervisor, and students in the highest regard.
  • Understand the learning objectives of the scenario, including assessment tool items and debriefing points.
  • Respect each learner's current level of training.
  • Awareness of his or her assigned impact on the learning experiences and the educational outcomes.
  • Hold an inclusive attitude that welcomes and supports diversity and inclusion of learners, faculty, and staff.
  • Commitment to continuous quality improvement and active participation in simulation based professional development.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to participants during simulation activities, fostering critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and teamwork skills.
  • Assist with simulation event preparation and clean up, contribute to the instruction of the event, provide feedback on the event, and participates in debrief sessions.
  • Provide teaching demonstrations on clinical skills, to include: IV insertion, CPR components of chest compressions, airway management and use of defibrillator.
  • Role-play for a variety of clinical roles while communicating with the control room and assisting learners in maintaining clear direction of the simulation case progression.
  • Complete cross training with the simulation technologist in basic manikin set up and operation.
  • Participate in training of part time nurses working in the Simulation Center.
  • Review simulation case documents and update as needed in shared computer files.
  • Maintain inventory and maintenance of supplies, equipment, and resources.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
