Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Engineering Division Division has an opening for an Electronic Engineering Technical Lead to join the team.

While assigned to the Advanced Light Source Upgrade ALS-U) Project, this position will provide leadership over the electronics fabrication and installation staff for projects related to the ALS-U for a minimum of 25% of the time. This role will perform advanced technical support in the field of electronics fabrication and installation. Design, layout and fabricate complex and highly specialized electronics equipment. Install large, integrated, control, instrumentation and communication systems. Develop complex prototype models for use in production scale manufacturing.

What You Will Do:

The Engineering Technical Lead will be responsible for the daily organization of technicians assigned to projects related to the ALS-U Electronics Engineering Fabrication and Installation group and for providing electronic design, documentation, procurement, fabrication/installation instructions and guidance to Engineering personnel as follows:

  • Given broad and general program/project directions, fabricate complex and highly specialized electronics apparatus that require advanced technical knowledge and expertise in manufacturing/assembly methods, tooling and equipment usage, circuit analysis, non-standard/custom packaging, enclosures, as well as component and material selection.
  • In association with project, program and facility coordination of engineering staff, plan and schedule work flow according to priorities. Monitor job progress and keep necessary staff informed.  Evaluate quantity, quality, and accuracy as required.
  • Train and assist users of equipment on its operation, installation and safety.
  • Provide on-the-job training to lower level or less experienced staff; lead small groups focused on specific tasks or assignments.
  • Lead the installation of accelerator oriented, large control, instrumentation and power conversion systems, which require a thorough understanding of the system's scope and the application of accelerator system integration principles as requested.
  • In collaboration with engineers, designers, and electronics coordinators, design and develop complex prototype models for production which emphasize ease-of/low-cost manufacturing, access for maintenance and calibration, and price/performance optimization.
  • Design and fabricate specialized electronic packaging and enclosures, which requires a deep and wide range of  expertise in metallic and non-metallic material forming and assembly techniques.
  • Assist ALS Users in the fabrication and installation of electronics equipment and assemblies.
  • Attend all safety meetings and job safety briefings. Promote and actively participate in activities that ensure a safe work environment.
  • Coordinate, specify, and purchase various hardware components for LBNL related jobs by exercising judgment within defined procedures and practices.  Provide cost estimates to customers and track costs to ensure the costs do not exceed the amount agreed prior to start of work.
  • Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, component layout diagrams, assembly drawings, verbal instructions, maintenance, calibration and operating manuals.
  • Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks control consoles and instrumentation cross-connect/interconnect cabling systems.
  • Operate a variety of hand, power and machine tools, including complex electronics or computer test equipment.
  • Assist in the design of general electronics equipment or systems; provide design details where lacking and recommend modifications to engineering designs as required.
  • Prepare formal instructional guides for shop and Engineering personnel. Review, draft and modify documentation for incorporation into the Engineering Build Standards.

What is Required:

  • Substantial advanced technical understanding of electronics fabrication and installation techniques, procedures, codes and quality standards. In particular: LBNL electronics Build Standard and NFPA National Electric Code.
  • Substantial work experience in fabricating complex, specialized electronics apparatus and installing large integrated systems.
  • Ability to successfully accomplish assignments independently with supervision limited to instructions regarding job scope and time/cost guidelines.
  • Substantial work experience and ability to use appropriate hand, manual box brake, sheer, power and machine tools of the trade.
  • Ability to perform design layouts requiring complex arithmetic calculations including trigonometry.
  • Ability to generate assembly sequence instructions, drawings, parts and material lists, component layout diagrams and other specialized fabrication documentation associated with prototype development.
  • Color vision sufficient to discern writing and component color codes, and safety related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23kg (50 lbs.).

Desired Qualifications:

  • An AA Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Computer Technology or the equivalent in formal military or industrial training.
  • General and computer aided electronics drafting and design documentation skills.
  • General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, and word processors.
  • Planning, teaching, organizing and writing skills.

Salary:

The full hourly range of this position is between $49.06 to $71.11 per hour and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $54.58 to $60.09 per hour depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
