Job Description Summary

The Electrical Systems Validation Engineer will be responsible for ensure proper validation and testing of the electrical subsystem across all turbine platforms, with a specific focus on topics relating to grid compliance. You will be involved in the review of grid codes/standards, the translation of those standards into requirements, and overseeing the creation of test plans to prove compliance/compatibility. The Electrical Systems Validation Engineer will also be a key expert in the development and upkeep of the Salem lab. This will include test/measurement equipment specifical/calibration, lab safety, lab upgrades and the willingness to work hands on in the Salem lab to oversee critical testing. You will also be supporting the development, operation, and upkeep of grid simulator and associated software.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the team responsible for planning, design, construction, and operation of equipment used to test and validate power electronics products
  • Lead compliance to EHS rules in conjunction with GE Renewables EHS lead for Test Labs
  • Drive a Safety First mindset
  • Drive a Continuous Improvement mindset – safety, lab improvements, test implementation improvements, testing processes, etc.
  • Manage the coordination, use and maintenance plan of test assets (labs, instrumentation, etc.)
  • Lead and ensure the effective partnership of converter design engineering and availability of all test assets
  • Lead the team that develops test operating procedures and complete safety reviews for test permits.
  • Lead technical reviews to evaluate new product requirement specifications for completeness and clarity for testing.
  • Partner with electrical system and converter design leads to develop product test plans, ensure complete test coverage, and establish and maintain traceability of requirements to validation results
  • Manage the process for documentation of test artifacts
  • Drive processes to document test results of defects and abnormal behaviors, and subsequent root cause evaluation of defects and abnormal behaviors witnessed during test or commissioning of assets
  • Drive lessons learned behavior
  • Partner with design team to ensure effective testing of converter systems to agency certification requirements (e.g. IEC, UL, CSA, etc)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or related Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience planning, designing, constructing, and commissioning complex electrical power circuits and systems
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing and operating state-of-the-art high power (>1MW) power electronics test systems

Desired Characteristics

  • Understanding of electrical and thermal design aspects for power electronics systems
  • Experience testing power electronic systems through product validation
  • Experience with instrumentation and measurement of power converters
  • Demonstrated project leadership capability

  • Proven interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Advanced Technology Degree
  • Ten years experience in power conversion design or test or related fields
  • Understanding of electrical and thermal design aspects for power electronics systems
  • Familiarity with IEC, UL, and CSA regulatory standards
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70 and 70E and Arc Flash analysis (EasyPower or SKM) and testing
  • Familiarity with low & medium voltage insulation systems-partial discharge theory and testing methods.
  • Working knowledge of low & high voltage electrical distribution, power conversion and control system design.
  • Working knowledge of wind turbine or photovoltaic system technologies.
