Job description

Supervises and directs the installation, maintenance, modifications and repair of all lighting and power circuits, fixtures, controls, motors, pumps and equipment that is operated from all voltage levels (e.g., pumps, lighting, instrumentation, fire alarms, etc.).

Union: This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union, Local 2037 and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding.

  • A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.   • A current, valid City of Pittsburgh Electrical Contractor License is required prior to appointment (Registered Electrician).

Qualifying Requirements:
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience as a journey-level electrician. Some supervisory experience is required. (Full-time is defined as 32 hours or more per week. Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or GED Equivalency.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is six (6) years.

NOTE: Candidates who did not go through an apprenticeship program to obtain an Electrical Journeyman's Certificate must show five (5) years of electrical experience to be recognized as a journey-level electrician. If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

  • Supervises and directs the installation, maintenance, repair and modifications of all lighting and power circuits, fixtures, controls, motors, pumps, and equipment that is operated from all voltage levels (e.g., pumps, lighting, instrumentation, fire alarm, etc.).
  • Ensures that work is performed in accordance with City, departmental and National Electric Code rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Performs electrical inspections for preventative maintenance.
  • Supervises assigned personnel; evaluates work, recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action; provides training and/or technical assistance as requested or required.
  • Coordinates work with supervisors and foremen of other building trades; meets with personnel from other City departments, utility companies and contractors regarding the work to be performed.
  • Maintains records, including timesheets, job progress, cost of materials, etc.; prepares accurate reports as requested or required.
  • Inspects field sites to ensure that work has been completed, to estimate materials needed to complete scheduled work, etc.; obtains required electrical permits.
  • Recommends materials, supplies, equipment and tools for purchase; creates and places orders; visits supply houses and purchases approved specialty items as requested or required.
  • On 24 hour call in the event of emergencies.
  • May deliver materials to job site.
  • Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, organizes and controls the materials, equipment and personnel under jurisdiction toward the effective, efficient and economical attainment of program goals, including maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.
  • Manages area of responsibility in strict accordance with applicable laws, regulations and established policy including union agreements to ensure fair and standardized treatment of employees.
  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
