POSITION SUMMARY:
The Electrical Engineer I/II - BESS will help develop the internal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) ELECTRICAL ENGINEERing process for assigned projects for a large Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) firm. This position includes oversight of electrical design and studies, consideration of field construction installation means & methods in chosen design decisions, design development & cost optimization, design of DC, MVAC, and LVAC auxiliary collection systems, and collaboration with internal and external team members.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for developing preliminary and detailed designs based on engineering principles for BESS projects.
- Develop and improve ELECTRICAL ENGINEERing calculation tools to specify cable, conduit, OCPD, and electrical equipment ratings based on project and governing code requirements.
- Work with the Estimating team to provide support with design concepts and design optimization of the Bill of Material (BOM) and Schedule of Values.
- Work with CAD designers to guide them through well designed site layouts and single line diagrams.
- Develop and maintain the database for different equipment used in BESS designs and update the database as new versions are received.
- Develop construction details and BOM for various construction work packages for assigned projects.
- Review utility interconnection documents like facility studies, interconnection agreements, or power purchase agreements and confirm the project design meets the requirements of those agreements.
- Provide support and design inputs to the PV Performance group to ensure they can develop accurate production models for RFP and contracted projects.
- Apply innovative engineering principles for cost optimization of BESS projects, develop design matrices for comparison, and maintain the same for future reference.
- Provide support to the procurement team and project engineers/project design leads regarding any questions concerning product compatibility, BOM qtys, reasons for design decisions and assumptions used in preliminary design and required equipment ratings for assigned projects.
- Attend mandatory training sessions on new products, installation methodologies, and safety protocols.
- Develop expertise with battery chemistries, inverters, DC-DC converters, BMS and EMS technologies, MV switchgear and transformers, and other material drivers associated with a proper design of utility scale BESS projects.
- Review and provide comments on EOR drawings and studies to ensure project cost is controlled through comparison to internal preliminary design, highlighting any change in assumptions leading to a design change.
- Provide guidance to other ELECTRICAL ENGINEERs, project design leads, project engineers, and CAD designers.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college.
- 1-2 years’ minimum work experience in BESS design.
- 1-2 years’ experience with ELECTRICAL ENGINEERing and/or work related to solar PV or any other renewable energy technology a plus.
- Professional experience with technical exhibit review and contract negotiation a plus.
PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Must be proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Other ELECTRICAL ENGINEERing simulation software (SAM, CYMCAP, ETAP, PVSOL, and WinIGS) experience a plus.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, SLDs, and specifications.
- Ability to understand manufacturers’ design parameters, application limitations, and installation guidelines.
- Familiar with creating BESS site plans and single line drawings (DC and AC systems).
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through on assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
- Able to work in a fast-moving environment while maintaining a positive attitude in stressful situations.
- High level of organizational skills and professionalism.
