Description:

Under general supervision, performs advanced technical and complex electric metering technician tasks.

Qualifications:

Journeyman metering card preferred. May hire an apprentice with High School GED or equivalent AND two (2) years of specialized training OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience which demonstrates working knowledge of operation of meters and instruments associated with electricity and electric power generation and distribution; AND must pass the Journey-level IPSA Metering Program Exam. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Utah Operator's License. Must complete annual training necessary to become a certified Journeyman Electric Meter Technician (BAT, IBEW OR IPSA). Must maintain annual continuing education requirements related to licenses and certifications. Computer experience with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), Excel and ability to learn new metering and billing software systems.

Salary ranges depending on experience:

Electric Meter Tech Apprentice I: $23.01 - $27.07

Electric Meter Tech Apprentice II: $25.40 - $29.88

Electric Meter Tech Apprentice III: $29.46 - $34.66

Electric Meter Tech Apprentice IV: $32.52 - $38.26

Journeyman Electric Meter Tech: $37.71 - $51.02

Responsibilities:

Responsible for the safe and efficient electrical metering installations, testing, maintenance and repairs of meters and metering equipment. Trains and assists other technicians; Evaluates safety conditions and plans safe working procedures; Adheres to all safety rules and policies; Reviews work to its completion and resolves problems; Performs all duties of the Meter Technician. Maintains and repairs metering power distribution equipment, supervisory controls, electrical substation metering, and appurtenant controls; Responds to emergency calls at various city locations as needed. Performs and supervises various electrical equipment for city departments as needed. Maintains and accounts for equipment and tools used; Prepares and submits work progress reports; Makes recommendations; Maintains reports; Responds to public complaints and inquiries dealing with billing, service irregularities, power consumption, and application of various rate schedules; Advises on and recommends solutions to problems; Works with the public to solve customer related problems involving accessibility to city-owned metering equipment and enforces ordinances regarding same; Oversees the operation of meter testing

and repairs; Works with multifunction meters to determine customer's power factor and enforce penalties; Evaluates new meters and related equipment; Makes decisions as to application of metering equipment (exp. Sizing CTS etc.); Writes and programs multifunction meters; Assists staff members as needed and performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Characteristics:

Knowledge of the functions and operation of meters and instruments associated with electricity and electric power generation and distribution. Knowledge of mathematics including algebra and trigonometry. Ability to handle customer complaints. Ability to analyze and identify complex problems and effectively resolve operational problems. Ability to work effectively on individual or team projects. Ability to coordinate, assign, and oversee the work of others. Ability to explain technical material in layman terms. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner in all circumstances. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and superiors. Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and eyesight to perform the work which includes working at considerable heights, lifting mechanical power tools, driving vehicles, climbing ladders, and pulling long runs of wire. Must be able to carry, bend, stoop, and walk over varied or rough terrain. Must be able to lift 50 to 75 lbs.

Must be able to get in and out of vehicles repeatedly.

Environmental Factors Exposure to adverse weather conditions, electrical solvents, oils and compounds, hazardous environments, heavy traffic, confined areas, electrical systems rated 120 volts to 138,000 volts, energized electrical equipment, and to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances and interacting with other employees and dealing with deadlines.
