Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Counselor
Full Time (35 hours per week max) Grant Funded
Salary $47,000

Summary Program & Position Description:
This is a full-time, grant funded, professional-level staff appointment in the Educational Opportunity Program. EOP is a state funded position that focuses on educationally and economically disadvantaged students.
Reporting to the Director of the EOP, the successful candidate will be expected to provide academic, career, and personal counseling to SUNY Ulster students who meet EOP eligibility requirements. Additionally, this individual will implement an outreach program informing prospective EOP students about SUNY Ulster's EOP program as well as other programs and services offered by the College. Occasionally may be assigned to evening or weekend hours for special events or at various locations.
Examples of Duties:
  • Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services regarding degree and vocational education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification and personal life management to EOP students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Counsel EOP student's academic, career and personal decision making.
  • Plans, organizes, develops, coordinates and implements programs, workshops, services, and co-curricular activities, directed at serving participants to support their success.
  • Assist students in the development and review of their (matriculated) Student Education Plans, including immediate and long-term goals.
  • Provide referral and follow up to appropriate Student Services programs and resources.
  • Counsel EOP students regarding choice of transfer institutions and requirements for programs at other colleges or universities; stay current with transfer requirements of other colleges and vocational training institutions.
  • Serve as liaison for campus outreach activities to target High Schools and Middle Schools.
  • Engage in activities that enhance the program's rapport with the local target High School, Middle Schools and the community.
  • Maintain regular and consistent contact with faculty members regarding student issues and concerns.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate counseling records using current technology, relay pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respect the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
  • Provides narrative and statistics for the EOP Program.
  • Participate in EOP group orientation/advising activities.
  • Participate in the program review processes.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with supervisor and campus colleagues on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the program and college.
  • Continue professional development and remain current in the counseling and outreach field through course work, conferences, workshops, and other appropriate means.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and any experience in counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development or closely related degree.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Exemplary counseling and guidance principles, techniques, and procedures, particularly for community college students in a student services program.
  • Experience in post-secondary career and transfer counseling.
  • Experience using electronic student education plans, course placements, student information systems and internet for academic and career planning in a post-secondary education setting.
  • Experience working with community college student support services programs such as Financial Aid, EOPS, Assessment, TRIO, and Foster Youth.
  • Completed coursework or other training predominately related to understanding and serving the needs of the target service population of EOP.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with K-12 schools, community organizations, and post-secondary institutions.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
