Description
The City of Norfolk's Maritime Center, Nauticus, is currently seeking an Education Specialist (Volunteer Coordinator). The Education Specialist will be responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating public programs around Nauticus' campus to include the museum and Battleship Wisconsin to increase the public's knowledge and understanding of maritime resources. The work will also involve presenting education programs, conducting off-site outreach programs, and planning, researching, developing, and coordinating program curriculum. Duties are divided between administrative work and program presentation.
The Education Specialist will:
- Assist in the implementation of educational programs for school groups.
- Act as a liaison with groups outside Nauticus to facilitate service and communications.
- Assist with the promotion of education programs and events.
- Conduct public presentations for school groups and community partners outside Nauticus to increase community awareness and involvement.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Presents educational science and history programs to diverse audiences including but not limited to school groups, scouts, teachers, and the public including the physical set up for programs, events, and activities.
- Assists program development and edits curriculum to meet national and state standards for science, math, and history with a focus on STEM concepts using a cross-curricular approach.
- Performs interactive educational science programs including tours, science-oriented tabletop activities, demonstrations, workshops, special events, and outreach programs.
- Creates and maintains various reports for use by senior management.
- Assists visitors with special needs, questions, or complaints in a courteous and responsible manner.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the public.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general profession or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Science, History, Education, and/or Museum Studies
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
Valid driver's license
CPR/First Aid certification a plus
One year in the guest relations field.
Formal or informal classroom instruction and management preferred.
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: Nauticus Maritime Center, One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510
Work Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00am-5:30pm, 40 hours per week. Position requires some evening and holiday shifts.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
