Job description

Statement of Purpose

ED Unit Educator is responsible for assessing learning needs, preparing and delivering quality educational experiences to employees utilizing the most effective and efficient methods possible. They will employ appropriately designed programs using educational principles to meet the needs desired by the requesting agent.  The Educator will develop strategies to measure the impact of their work on the institution in a manner most appropriate for the type of education provided. 

ED Unit Educator will focus specifically on new graduates in unit as well as new to specialty.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Director of Emergency Department (nursing)

Works in close collaboration with staff, supervisors, and Education department across the North Country Health System.

Assesses learning needs:

  • Engages with new graduates/new to specialty to co-develop orientation plan with Education department
  • Identifies needs for remedial action/ alternative training methods.
  • Serves as a role model and as a resource to others regarding educational needs.
  • Assesses learning styles and needs of the population to be educated/trained prior to designing programs
  • Actively seeks and utilizes new ideas/ resources to increase competence of staff in the care of patients.
  • Collaborates with team members to develop appropriate educational plans and identifies barriers to learning.
  • Identifies learning needs of NCHS and the performance goals of NCHS.

Designs education/ training programs:

  • Develops and provides educational materials in support of programs.
  • Identifies relevant logistical issues to assure minimal disruption of implementation process.
  • Plans and develops individualized educational experiences for staff based on learning needs.
  • Creates proposals for parties requesting educational programs to ensure that programs meet the needs articulated by the requesting agent.
  • Designs or consults on the design of education/training programs to provide an effective educational experience for program participants with appropriate workplace outcomes.

Coordinates education/training programs:

  • Promotes training/educational programs to create appropriate awareness of the events.
  • Identifies subject matter experts to guarantee that information taught is correct and current.
  • Manages program schedule so that courses run on time with all necessary information covered.
  • Schedules room of appropriate size and location and at a convenient time for the requesting group.
  • Submits program for contact or educational hours to ensure that appropriate credit is awarded to participants.

Teaches program:

  • Conducts classes using adult teaching/learning principles.
  • Researches and prepares class materials in a professional manner.
  • Uses multi-media resources when appropriate to meet learning needs.
  • Manages details of ongoing programs, including space availability and timing, especially where program content is deemed mandatory by the organization to ensure access to classes for all who are required to attend.
  • Maintains the rights to privacy and confidentiality and assumes the responsibility for carrying out the guidelines of NCHS’ Patient Rights Policy.

Evaluates program:

  • Reports results to appropriate authorities
  • Revises program, as indicated by evaluation results.
  • Compiles and interprets data to draw conclusions regarding program effectiveness.
  • Completes resignation and attendance reports within one working day of class completion.
  • Creates and administers evaluation tools to the designated level of evaluation for each course.

Maintains subject matter expertise:

  • Models the care of patients in clinical areas.
  • Maintains knowledge and demonstrates stills in relevant area.
  • Serves as a resource to staff interested in developing their skills and abilities in education.
  • Forms and works with focus/ working groups and resource persons as appropriate on an ongoing basis.
  • Advances personal and professional growth and development through participation in educational and in service programs, workshops, and professional affiliations.
  • Develops and maintains ongoing relationships with professional associations and organizations by participating in regional/national conferences/joining committees, etc.

Upholds NCHS Values and Standards of Conduct:

  • Demonstrates integrity, compassion, and respect when working with patients, families, and staff.
  • Protects the privacy and confidentiality of patients, families, staff and NCHS proprietary business and/or financial information.
  • Meets NCHS attendance expectations as outlined in the Human Resources Policies and Procedures manual. (Reports to work on time, manages unscheduled time off, etc.)
  • Maintains a professional appearance that is appropriate for his/her position and work environment as defined by the NCHS Dress Code and department regulations.
  • Takes responsibility to help maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Proactively seeks to improve systems and processes.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of the NCHS resources (phones, e-mails, Internet, photocopies, supplies, etc.)
  • Demonstrates a positive impact on the community by participating in NCHS and/or community service volunteer activities.
  • Communicates a positive image about NCHS to the community.

Job Requirements

  • BSN with 5 years bedside ER experience OR 7 years ER nursing experience with progressive leadership experience including charge nurse
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS & TNCC
  • Current RN Licensure in the state of Vermont required.
  • Appropriate experience in specific clinical area.
  • Demonstrated success as a preceptor or mentor
  • Requires significant judgment based on experience and sound educational and organizational theory. Able to work with significant autonomy.
