SUMMARY
The Early Childhood Specialist Mentor Teacher provides classroom coaching for teachers. Under the general supervision of the Early Learning Centers Director and Assistant Director the Early Childhood Specialist Mentor Teacher will assist teaching staff in meeting program standards for ECEAP, EHS and Childcare Care licensing that aligns with the sites' Early Achievers continuous improvement goals. The job provides hands on instruction of the curriculum planning and implementation, curriculum fidelity by demonstrating and coaching all required elements of curriculum and documentation and individualized instruction. The mentor teacher will inspire teachers to work from their strengths to meet the unique and individual needs of the children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & OTHER DUTIES
Essential Functions
  • Participates in new staff orientation to Bates early learning programs and sites staff.
  • Facilitate teacher's understanding and implementation of teaching strategies to improve student outcomes based on instructional assessment data, program data and classroom observation.
  • Encourage professional development and records in MERIT to meet the continuing education hours annual requirement, and state regulations.
  • Collaborate with the PSESD educational coach to reach program improvement goals.
  • Monitors classroom (e.g. documentation, ratios, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate supervision of children, quality teacher-child interactions, and compliance with program, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist in the delivery of the developmental screening and assessment.
  • Regular weekly classroom visits to follow-up with staff and to monitor for understanding and implementation of lesson plans and guidance strategies.
  • Maintain required recordkeeping, agendas, minutes, and sign-in sheets.
  • Bring new ideas to the classrooms by participating in professional development and presenting to teachers.
  • Attend recommended training programs, conferences, and organizations that promote professional growth and improvement of EARLY CHILDHOOD education.
  • Demonstrate self-reflection to ensure cultural awareness and address bias toward children, families and colleagues.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Model best practices, trouble shoot difficult situations in communication with directors. Delivers ongoing instruction, consultation, assessment, and personal observations to instructional staff for the purpose of ensuring exemplary early learning classroom and quality teacher and child interactions.
  • Coordination of teacher meetings. Present at staff meetings.
  • Travel from site to site daily. This is not an office job.

Non-Essential/Other Functions
  • Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc.
  • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.
  • Additional activities, duties and responsibilities may be added with or without notice to meet college needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervises personnel for the purpose of provide coaching and consultation on technical issues, adaptive challenges, professional development and advancing the development of high performing teams.

Conditions of Employment
  • Maintain a Washington Early Learning Managed Education and Registry Information Tool (MERIT) account, containing current educational qualifications.
  • Complete 20 hours of State Training and Registry System (STARS) education hours.
  • Provide immunization record that you have received the MMR vaccine.
  • Have negative results of TB test/or a recent negative chest x-ray and statement from health provider.
  • Must have a current Portable Background Check in MERIT (WAC 170-06).
  • Maintain food handler card.
  • Maintain first aid/CPR.
  • Attend Limited Restraint training within the first year of employment.
  • Complete annual required trainings
  • This position is required to work on campus and at off campus locations.
  • Prior to an offer of employment, a Portable Background Check in MERIT will be conducted. Once an offer of employment is made, a secondary background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from this background check will not preclude employment but will be contingent in determining the employee's suitability and competence to continue to perform in the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates Degree from an accredited college/university in Early Childhood or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience in a child development/childcare center program with increasing levels of responsibility and supervisory experience is required.

Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in job-related area with an emphasis in 45 Early Childhood Education credits.

Retirement Plans
Faculty and Exempt Positions
Faculty have to choose between either the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP), also known as TIAA or Plan 3 of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS). Click to compare the two plans.

SBRP (TIAA) is a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
    • Employee Contribution: Under 35: 5% of gross salary; 35-49: 7.5% of gross salary; 50 & over: 10% of gross salary
    • Employer Contribution: Under 35: 5% of gross salary; 35-49: 7.5% of gross salary; 50 & over: 10% of gross salary

TRS Plan 3 is a defined benefit and a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
    • Employee Contribution: Varies from 5% to 15%
    • Employer Contribution: 15.41% of gross salary

PERS Plan 3 is a defined benefit and a defined contribution plan with the following contribution rates:
    • Employee Contribution: Varies from 5% to 15%
    • Employer Contribution: 12.83% of gross salary

Classified Positions

Employee and employer contributions to applicable retirement plans are mandatory. The amount of the deduction and contribution are dependent upon the retirement plan chosen and may vary by current contribution rates in effect.
Bates provides $35,000 basic life insurance for death from any cause and $5,000 basic accidental death and dismemberment at no cost to the employee. Employees can enroll in additional low cost life insurance for themselves and dependents.
Bates provides a basic LTD insurance plan at no cost to employees. The basic plan pays a maximum of
$240 per month after 90 days of total disability. The optional LTD plan pays 60% of the first $10,000 of monthly salary, reduced by any deductible income such as social security or retirement benefits.
Employee cost is dependent upon benefit waiting period chosen.

Leaves and Holidays
Vacation
Eligible exempt and classified employees accrue annual leave at rates determined by their employee status, ranging from 7 to 16 hours per month when eligible.
Sick Leave
Eligible classified, faculty, and exempt staff accrue sick leave monthly. Employees represented by a bargaining unit should refer to their negotiated agreement for sick leave rules and accrual rates.

Bates observes the following holidays/non-work days:
