The Salvation Army's donation center is operated by a team referred to as the "dock". Donations attendants are responsible for receiving donations, power sorting, loading and unloading trucks. TSA takes various types of donations including clothing, housewares, shoes, accessories, furniture, linen and more. These items are sorted and placed into plastic or cardboard gaylords (a large box used for storage of items),_ and bins._ The flow and organization of this department is essential to the success of the backroom.
Receiving and Sorting Donations:
- Ensure good customer service during entire donor interaction
- Understand acceptable vs. unacceptable donations (Utilize “Do Not Accept” list)
- Confirm items in vehicle for donation, unload them with care, and keep a tally of each vehicle
- Place the donations on the sorting table or into appropriate container, never on the ground
- Power Sort Donations- Quickly identify sellable and non-sellable items and place them in the appropriate container. Donation attendants must understand each sorting category
- Complete container switch outs as needed and ensure they are labeled correctly (“Pallet Jack training” issued by TSA).
Working Conditions: The work environment for this position is a store environment with a quiet to moderate noise level. The environment may be dusty and may experience temperature fluctuations based on weather. May stand for extended periods. Full-time/Part-time position; will require weekend and evening hours.
Daily Cleanup: The last 15-30 minutes of the day is used for time to clean up. All full containers need to be switched out and staged for the next day. The sorting table is cleared of all product, signage brought in, and the donation area (including outside exterior/alley) swept clean. Tally sheet and donation receipts are given to the MOD and the donation count must be reported on the Daily Production Count Sheet.
