Job description

Under the general direction of the District Division Chief of Traffic Safety & Operations (TSO), the Senior Transportation Engineer serves as the District Traffic Safety (DTS) Branch Chief. The Branch Chief acts as first line supervisor and has charge of varied and difficult transportation engineering work in the field of office involving the supervision of engineers and others engaged in transportation development activities. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for providing experienced, authoritative, and professional management of Traffic Safety programs and performs other difficult and complex engineering work relating to specialized transportation systems. The position requires possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
This is a Limited Term position which may be extended to 24 months or become permanent.
While at the base of operations, the incumbent works in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. However, due to periodic problems or energy concerns, the building temperature and climate may fluctuate. As much as 50% or more of the incumbents time shall be spent in the field during daylight and/or nighttime conditions. The incumbent may be required to travel long distances within the District, including San Diego and Imperial Counties. Some travel outside the District may be required and may be exposed to traffic weather conditions. Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State owned or leased vehicle.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their work sites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.
Statement of Qualifications - Applicants must also submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). The SOQ is a discussion of how an applicant's education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria in the duty statement and qualify the applicant for this position.

• The SOQ must follow the number format, must respond to the criteria below, must not exceed two pages in length, and be typed in size 11 font.

2. Provide examples of your experience in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing (e.g., presentations, negotiations, providing solutions to staff, management, and other departmental decision-makers.)
