Position Summary- District Engineer

Provide overall project management support for and lead capital projects related to aggregate processing facilities in Martin Marietta’s Midwest Region of the Central Division.  Responsibilities include management of project design, estimation and field construction, various aggregate plant improvements, new plant installations, process improvement projects, and other construction management projects in the aggregate’s arena, which consists of surface quarries, underground mines, and sand & gravel facilities.  This leader must possess the ability to safely and effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, adhere to and communicate variances to approved budgets, and track completion of projects on a regular basis without losing sight of the direction of the projects within the District.

 

Responsibilities

·       Collaborate with Operations Services, Operational Excellence, and Operations teams on issues critical to project success and the business process; must be customer service oriented

·       Manage District-wide capital projects, non-capital projects, and Operational Excellence initiatives.

·       Continually monitor and analyze progress toward operational objectives.

·       Responsible for communication and coordination with operations managers, senior management and corporate managers on project status

·       Establish and maintain positive relationships with all existing and new general contractors and subcontractors.  Work to expand the quantity and quality of contractors available for bidding.

·       Analyze the effects of various mechanical improvements to aggregate operations

·       Experience with AggFlow (Aggregate Plant Simulation program) and AutoCAD software for plant design required.  Experience with MS Project or other Gantt-chart type of software preferred.

·       Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws/regulations and company policy concerning safety, environmental, EEO/AAP, and others

·       Ensure coordination of raw material requirements with respective personnel both inside and outside the Company

·       Works closely with Procurement to ensure that we have the appropriate vendors and suppliers available for the project

·       Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to issues as they arise

·       Develop scope, budgets, initial concepts and bid documents related to capital construction projects.

  • Knowledge of material handling systems, including the installation and start-up of conveyors, screens, crushers, pumps and pumping systems, material washing systems & sand screws
  • Innovative and knowledgeable in aggregate plant processing and able to assess and submit various process improvements for our aggregate operations
  • Knowledgeable in effectively utilizing plant automation.  Basic understanding of medium-voltage electrical equipment, layout, and operations preferred.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and provide oversight for steel fabrication and erection
  • Computer proficient in Microsoft Suite and ability to learn new MM internal programs and systems as needed
  • Leader must be successfully able to communicate and manage project-related needs to cross-functional team members through project life-cycles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in mining, civil, construction, or mechanical engineering; or equivalent experience required; PE license a plus
  • 2+ years of experience in aggregates processing, bulk material handling, construction management, or project management preferred.
  • Must be willing to travel to accommodate job requirements up to 50% of the time
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCad required.
  • Experience with successful execution of capital construction projects in underground mining environments is highly desireable.

Work Environment

This job operates frequently in a maintenance and operations environment in both underground and surface locations.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from ground to waist, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, manual dexterity, repetitive motion, standing, sitting (must be able to sit for extended periods of time up to 8 hours), walking, climbing stairs, bending and stooping, and the ability to drive.
