Title:District Educational Interpreter-Translator
Salary Schedule Range: 60
Hours per day: 8
Purpose of Position: To provide accurate interpretation and translation services from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
Employment Status: Full-time (FLSA Non-exempt)
Reporting: Reports to an assigned supervisor, usually a department or program Director.
Location: District administration
Essential Functions:
Provide translation of highly specialized materials such as Board of Education policies and administrative regulations, stipulated agreements regarding student discipline, instructional and educational materials, Individual Education Plans (IEP's) and other documents.
Provide simultaneous interpretation with the use of interpreting equipment at board meetings, administrative hearing, community forums, Special Education Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and other technical presentations.
Translate a high volume of IEP documents, reports from specialists, and other material.
Edit and review materials for accuracy and comprehensibility to ensure that the tone and register of the target text match the source text.
Localize texts to produce translations that are relevant to the target audience.
Operate a computer and various mass market software applications.
Maintain accurate records of work requests and finished materials.
Other Functions:
Perform related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
Inside work with no exposure to weather conditions.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; sitting for extended periods of time; ability to carry equipment or materials up to 20lbs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work independently or as a member of a team and meet tight deadlines.
Knowledge of electronic document management archival and retrieval.
Knowledge of mass market or proprietary software used in translating.
Ability to operate a computer and a variety of contemporary office equipment.
Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with school site staff, parents or guardians and District staff.
Ability to process a high-volume of translating work with accuracy.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
Education, Training and Experience:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Translation and Interpretation or related field (law, economics, etc); or a Bachelor's degree in a non-related field and a certificate in translation and interpretation issued by an accredited institution, and two (2) years of translation experience in an office environment, preferably in the public sector.
Additional Requirements:
Successful passage of a three-phase selection process that includes a translation exercise, simultaneous interpretation exercise, and a panel interview.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
