THE DEPARTMENT

As a part of the Student Health and Wellbeing Cluster within the Division of Student Affairs, the Disability Resource Center (DRC) supports this commitment by providing services and resources intended to facilitate equal access for students with documented disabilities. DRC serves as the campus office to verify eligibility for services and to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations and services. DRC's approach to providing services for students with disabilities is interactive and highly individualized.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

DRC Intake & Accommodative Services

  • Determines eligibility and effective accommodations for students with disabilities in compliance with CSU policy, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable federal and state civil rights legislation. This involves:
    • Ensuring timely review and processing of student applications.
    • Reviewing disability documentation and conducting intake interviews and assessments to identify persisting challenges with adaptive behaviors, disability awareness and disclosure, and using support systems.
    • Determining which accommodations will be necessary in the university environment (residence hall, classroom, transportation, etc.).
    • Keeping accurate and thorough records to document basis for eligibility in accordance with the ethics and laws protecting student confidentiality.
  • Tracks and monitors students who are identified as having more serious needs based on severity of disability, academic jeopardy, history of behavioral problems, etc.).
  • Ensures accommodations are efficiently and effectively provided, including consultation and coordination with both the student and the appropriate course instructor/Department Chair/College Dean to identify academic accommodations that are educationally feasible and do not change the essential elements of a course activity, curriculum/program, or policy.
  • Participates in the development and facilitation of new programs (e.g., workshops, new student orientations, etc.) to enhance DRC support services for DRC students. Assists in the development of innovative approaches utilizing available resources to meet the needs of DRC students, emphasizing independence, wellness, and full participation in the learning process.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Assists in collection of assessment data, preparing reports and presentation on DRC trends.
  • Assists in assessing outcomes and develop strategies for improved services, programs, and communication for both the Disability Resource Center.
  • Maintains confidential student records and tracks student progress in AIM and other required databases.
  • Conducts regular and comprehensive assessments of the quality and effectiveness of interactions with students. Provides robust documentation of interactions, interventions, and programming via available tools. Summarizes all information in annual reports and provides data-informed recommendations for improvements.

Integrated Care & Linkage

  • Assesses student needs based on presenting concerns from the referring party or the students themselves; formulates an appropriate course of action that addresses, minimizes, or otherwise resolves the presenting concern.
  • Assists students with disabilities in accessing resources that will help improve self-advocacy, decision- making, and social interaction skills needed to personally resolve issues and to achieve maximum integration and academic success at the institution.
  • Assists referred students in making use of University and/or community support services and benefits such as Cal Fresh, Clothes Closet, Emergency Housing, local mental health/counseling services, and medical services.
  • Consults regularly with various departments such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health and Wellness Services, Dean of Students, University and Foundation Housing, and University PD.
  • Identifies and catalogues networks of on and off-campus services to assist students in overcoming challenges jeopardizing their ability to persist in college, including disability testing resources.
  • Work closely with DRC Counseling team to identify at risk and students of concern. Determine appropriate referrals and resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a jobrelated field may be substituted for one (1) year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a jobrelated field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
  • The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • General knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management.
  • General knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to:
    • Carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
    • Advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
    • Determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
    • Reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
    • Plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations.
    • Analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
    • Understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served.
    • Establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience advising, counseling, coaching, and/or teaching college students with disabilities.
  • Understanding of physical, cognitive, and psychological disabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with all levels in a demanding environment.
  • Strong crisis intervention and consultation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the campus community and the public.
  • Experience speaking in a variety of public settings such as classrooms and large group assemblies.
  • The ability to prepare and present oral and written reports/data which are clear, concise, and comprehensive.
  • Collect and analyze data/information, draw conclusions from the analysis and make recommendations.
  • Proven ability to identify problems, use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decisions autonomously.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing difficult and complex situations involving students.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity, a strong sense of ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of effective strategies to ensure retention and graduation of students with disabilities.
  • Experience in a large, complex, and diverse public higher education institution.
  • Well-developed skills for conferring with students, faculty and staff about, or in, an emergency situation.
  • Previous grant or project coordination experience.
  • Experience developing and maintaining case management files.
  • Broad knowledge of on and off campus resources for educational and mental health services.
  • Understanding of FERPA, ADA, As Amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable laws.
  • Working knowledge of advanced motivational interviewing and counseling techniques.
  • Maintains current knowledge of, and utilizes research-based and best practices, for provision of services for students with disabilities.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the APC bargaining unit, the CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the following site, https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/Classification-Standards.aspx. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the following site: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/salary-schedule-documents.aspx. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is minimum $3,732 and maximum $8,176 per month. Please refer back to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
