Description
Effectively direct the Mountain Area Transportation business, providing Mountain Area farmer-owners’ professional, safe, and efficient milk hauling service. Lead the operations with a continuous improvement mindset, recognizing and implementing initiatives that drive improvements within the business. Responsible for all aspects of distribution logistics involved with Raw Milk order, collection, and delivery process. Oversee all fleet purchasing, fleet maintenance programs, and internal truck garage operations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and manage operational budget to ensure safe, professional, and efficient milk hauling services are provided to farmer-owners.
- Develop methodology to ensure a high level of competency in regards to the specifications of milk hauling units that provide the most advantageous cost of operation. Effectively use and or develop fleet purchase programs that provide cost savings and vendor support.
- Provide current hauling service performance metrics, financial analyses, route/delivery maps, and other related transportation data to facilitate effective decision-making and strategic planning.
- Oversee regulatory compliance, including Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including all necessary licensing, permitting, reporting, and training at state and federal level. This would include coordinating with and providing to the appropriate DFA compliance department all necessary information and documentation.
- Ensure Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) compliance as it applies to milk hauling and on farm storage is current and complete as required.
- Review transportation department work to validate high quality service to farmer-owners and customers. Provide regular performance updates to leadership and other DFA departments. Cooperate with marketing and membership departments to quickly resolve any customer or farmer-owner concerns with the transportation department.
- Assist in the development and ongoing evaluation of key performance indicators, providing a basis for measuring continuous improvement in all areas of transportation, including hauling efficiencies, regulatory and safety compliance, human resources, as well as farmer-owner and customer satisfaction.
- Serve as hauling services coordination point related to membership and marketing. Improve communication with leadership and staff on hauling-related matters.
- Work closely with the Mountain Area Human Resource department to ensure driver recruitment, hiring and training that ensures a safe, professional well trained group of drivers that fit our culture of providing a high level of service to our farmer-owners and customers.
- Working with the marketing department, maintain cooperative working relationships with other DFA areas to capitalize on organizational capabilities and inter-area milk marketing opportunities.
- Evaluate and prepare cost justification for capital expenditures on equipment and facilities to ensure adequate resources are available to meet farmer-owner and customer needs.
- Oversee garage and maintenance facilities to ensure a cost effective repair and maintenance program that maximizes equipment life cycle and provides a safe and dependable fleet of equipment.
- Represent DFA regarding transportation-related matters with federal and state regulatory agencies and legislators as well as state and local trade organizations such as American Trucking Association (ATA).
- Provide oversight in all areas of contract hauling service, including farmer-owner/customer service satisfaction, route re-alignments and rate negotiations.
- Maintain current knowledge of transportation field technological and management systems innovations, evaluate their applicability to fluid milk transportation, and seek to implement those with greatest potential benefit.
- Dedicate effort to safety as we expect every employee to leave work in the same condition as they arrive.
- Ensure all DFA quality, safety, and good manufacturing practices (GMP) policies and procedures are adhered to.

Requirements
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, insurance, or related field and 7 years of logistics or transportation experience, including 2 years of management experience
- Certification and/or License
- Valid driver’s license
- May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications and/or licenses in the future
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of company computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Electronic On Board Recorder (EOBR) programs
- Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and personnel management
- Knowledge of DOT, PMO, and OSHA rules and regulations
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Able to learn and utilize onboard equipment and employee tracking systems
