Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the direction of the day-to-day departmental functions as they pertain to the operations and responsibilities of the Special Donor Services staff. This position will also coordinate and oversee special projects. Includes budgets, purchases, recruitment of clinical and clerical staff, assure appropriate orientation, supervision, and continuing education/ in-service.This position will provide oversight and consultation, as needed, on all facets of transfusion related diseases and related laboratory tests.

 

The incumbent will work within New York Blood Center and eventually across the New York Blood Center Enterprise (NYBCe) to ensure compliance of donor notification requirements and drive standardization in all related processes as the BECS system is standardized across divisions. This role  will continue to monitor the status of current and emerging infectious diseases that could be transmitted through transfusion or tissue or cellular transplantation and the potential adverse outcomes for patients, for purposes of defining NYBCe patient-related transfusion safety strategies and monitoring the development of the tests and screening procedures for infectious diseases and recommend action to NYBCe leadership.

 

 

The incumbant will supports Environmental Health & Safety, Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Program, Animal Research Laboratories, Covid -19 employee tracking and other programs that require blood sample phlebotomy and counseling. He/she will  ensure NYBCe maintains compliance in re-entry protocols that would return eligible deferred blood donors, based on current scientific data and applicable regulations, to active status. Interact with the FDA and AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) on these issues as appropriate. The position will also provide oversight of the Post Donation Information process, ensuring interdiction of units and the management of donor profile in BECS (Blood Establishment Computer System).

 

This position will have oversight for these activities for NYBC Enterprises.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Provide supervisory oversight, train, mentor and develop assigned staff.
  • Ensure adherence to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), regulations, guidelines, practices, and policies.
  • Notifies and counsels blood donors about significant test results inclusive of repeat donor sampling for additional testing. Provides oversight of state notification as required in each of NYBCe's operating locations.
  • Executes miscellaneous protocols: post donation information, various donor eligibility and deferral protocols. Initiates product retrieval process.
  • Provides support for interpretation and application of donor eligibility criteria to include responding to inquiries from Collection staff, blood donors and Divisional process owners.
  • Provide counseling and follow-up for reported donor adverse events.
  • Ensures hospital letters are generated daily and that documentation is complete.
  • Assures that counseling, clinical issues and operational functions are completed appropriately.
  • Partners with Collections in the managing of miscellaneous medical processes ensuring donor safety is verified prior to product collection, e.g., Hemochromatosis Patient Program, RBC/Plasma blood loss program, donor reaction follow-up and Granulocyte collection. Serve as resource for Blood Bank Directors and treating physicians regarding counseling, testing, safety of the blood supply, eligibility issues, treatment, and research protocols.
  • Investigates hospital reported post transfusion patient adverse events.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree in biological sciences, epidemiology, public health, or healthcare related field of study or advanced professional degree (ie. PhD, RN, MLT, MT, SBB).

 

Experience:

  • 8  or more years of management/supervisory capacity in a healthcare, blood banking or government regulated setting.

 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of computerized systems and applications (Microsoft Office).
  • Knowledge of relevant infectious diseases.
  • Knowledge of FDA and AABB requirements

Travel:

  • Domestic travel up to 5%.

 

Skills & Abilities:

 

  • Ability to read and understand protocols and SOPS and make preliminary assessment of their appropriateness and clarity.
  • Attention to detail in all work processes.
  • Elevated level of interpersonal skills to handle a variety of moderate issues and situations. Position requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with blood donors, and a variety of staff.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally, to others in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and customers in a helpful, courteous, and friendly manner while demonstrating sensitivity to and respect for diverse populations.
  • Ability to motivate and lead local as well as remote teams.
  • Ability to plan and organize job tasks or resources in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to be responsive and available to management to address issues and concerns as they arise.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands. 
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems within established policies and procedures. 
  • Ability to identify complex problems in a timely manner, decipher information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

 

 

For applicants who will perform this position in New York City or Westchester County, the proposed annual salary is $145,000.00 p/yr to $155,000.00 p/yr. For applicants who will perform this position outside of New York City or Westchester County, salary will reflect local market rates and be commensurate with the applicant's skills, job-related knowledge, and experience.
