Purpose of the Position:
The Director of People Operations (“Director”) is responsible for managing a People Operations team and providing HR support to assigned departments. The Director oversees and supports the creation and clarification of policies, processes, and people strategies that promote an engaged workforce. The Director acts as a partner, aligning institutional objectives with team members and management in designated units. The Director serves as a consultant to leadership on Human Resources related issues. Assesses and anticipates HR-related needs, communicating needs proactively with their HR Team and departments. Maintains an effective level of institutional literacy about the departments’ mid-range plans, organizational design, and culture. Trains their team to do the same. The Director will help to strategize across the organization on people and culture-related initiatives.
UMA is a nonprofit healthcare educational institution with a national presence. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida and founded in 1994, UMA offers content-rich, interactive online programs as well as hands-on training at our Clearwater, Florida campus.
- Anticipated starting salary of $130,000; pay rate negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
Functional:
- Oversee UMA’s People Operations function with an emphasis on engaging team members to reduce attrition, promote an inclusive culture of trust, accountability, psychological safety, and organizational excellence, while reducing employment-related risk to UMA.
- Collaborate extensively with UMA’s Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and L&D departments on team member engagement.
- Partner with AVP to Develop and implement People Ops strategies, policies, and procedures in alignment with organizational objectives.
- Lead the people movement process.
- Oversee UMA’s annual review
- Ensure that People Operations data is clearly communicated to UMA business units and provides strategic insight and trend analyses.
- Effectively lead the team collaborating with stakeholders to respond to, investigate, and resolve complex team member concerns, with an emphasis on direct support to UMA’s Shared Services departments.
- Partner with AVP and Business Insights on departmental Team Member Engagement Surveys to understand team members’ perspectives and identify gaps between organizational goals and daily operations.
- Collaborate with leadership to understand business goals and ensure People Ops initiatives support the overall strategic plan.
- Ensure that the department’s policies and procedures follow federal and state laws.
- Responsible for the Team Handbook updates, comprehension, and
- Advise management and team members regarding the interpretation and application of policies, work rules, and standards of conduct as defined in our Team Member
- Works with leadership, human resources staff, legal counsel, and team members to investigate, document and resolve alleged violations of law, for example charges of discrimination, Title IX Allegations, or harassment. Oversees and prepares report of findings and recommends corrective action. Manages team member relations issues from beginning to end, including partnering with team members on performance improvement plans, investigating complaints, issuing corrective actions and separations.
- Stay abreast of HR trends, legal developments, and industry best practices to ensure the organization remains current and compliant.
- Models UMA Values and Culture Statement and focuses on strengthening team member connection to UMA’s Mission and Vision.
- Support UMA short- and long-term organizational goals.
- Engage in institutional-sponsored activities and initiatives as appropriate.
- Lead with courage in support of change initiatives that impact the organization.
Team Member Leadership:
- Provide people-focused leadership to the People Ops team, including performance management, coaching, professional development, and career development.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that promotes innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Develop career and development paths for each team member.
- Set clear expectations for all team members, analyze goals, activities, and results to determine action plans to improve individual and team performance per stated performance management guidelines.
- Work with stakeholders across the institution to drive planning and execution of engagement plans.
Compliance:
- Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and
- Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree or HR industry certifications.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Human Resources.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a leadership role
- Proven history of successfully managing a department with emphasis on team member relations.
- Strong critical thinking, conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation skills.
- Able to present and communicate to large groups of people.
- Must be flexible and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks.
- Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to manage and administer a broad range of tasks including resolving complaints, counseling managers and team members on the interpretation of policies, procedures.
