About the Department:

The Office of Academic Affairs seeks to enrich the academic success, engagement, opportunities, and skills of undergraduate students in the College of Engineering at NC State University by supporting a diverse learning environment that is respectful of 21st century engineering challenges. We promote the engineering profession and an understanding of engineering concepts and habits of mind among a broad set of constituents.

Essential Job Duties:

Primary Purpose:The primary purpose of the position is to provide leadership and oversight for all operations of the Women and Minority Engineering Programs to broaden the participation of underrepresented and historically marginalized populations in engineering and computer science fields by achieving recruitment, retention, graduation initiatives, promoting cultural awareness, and academic enhancement efforts in support of the strategic goals of the North Carolina State University, College of Engineering, and Office of Academic Affairs.
The essential duties are to:

  • Provide vision and oversight in the planning, coordination, and implementation of Women and Minority Engineering Programs to build community, foster a sense of belonging, and create a more welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff
  • Responsible for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of direct reports by carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with university, college, and departmental policies and procedures
  • Work in partnership with the Engineering Foundation to identify and cultivate financial donors by developing relationships that lead to the increased revenue supporting the multi-year mission of the Women and Minority Engineering Programs which leads to sustained investments from various stakeholders at the local, regional, state, and national levels
  • Oversee the budget for the Women and Minority Engineering Programs as well as allocate funds for programs and initiatives in alignment with university accounting standards
  • Enhance the university experience for all students with emphasis on underrepresented and historically marginalized groups by providing direction to student organizations in the development of sustainable cross-cultural activities, resolutions, and ongoing initiatives
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with corporate and industry partners, community support organizations, and leaders from underrepresented communities by networking and developing new relationships
  • Work with the Strategic Marketing and Planning Manager to develop marketing materials and produce strategic plans for a focused audience
  • Advise the Office of Academic Affairs recruiting team on efforts to recruit multicultural students
  • Teach introductory engineering courses and participate in various recruiting, student success and outreach activities
  • Serve, lead and participate in national/international communities and conversations in the WMEP, broadening participation, and student success spaces, promoting and sharing the excellent work being done in our programs
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Office of Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering by serving on relevant university, college, and department committees, and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Other Responsibilities:

  • Serve on relevant university and college committees in addition to other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in one of the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, higher education or related field with one degree in an engineering field and at least five years of working with diverse populations and program management, or higher education experience with increasing responsibilities including community engagement, budgetary responsibility, and cultural competence, or
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics with at least 10+ years of equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and integrity
  • Interpersonal skills and political acumen to build effective bridges and collaborative relationships
  • Demonstrated record of commitment to advancing educational opportunities and student success for underrepresented and historically marginalized populations in engineering and/or STEM disciplines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and success in, obtaining funding in support of programs
  • Proven experience with strategic planning and assessment
  • Knowledge of best practices related to the delivery of engineering education content
  • Understand and effectively use Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar Google applications in addition to Adobe Acrobat/Fox-it
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to re-prioritize daily tasks, to accommodate fluctuating needs and deadlines
