GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Director of Technical Operations is responsible for all aspects of product scale-up and commercialization activities, and supports operations by identifying and implementing process improvements to improve product quality, reduce operating costs, and increase production capacity. As an integral part of continuous improvement efforts, provides leadership, guidance and training to improve efficiencies in operations. Explores relevant enabling technologies, with focus on driving cost savings. Provides functional technical support to Manufacturing, Quality and other functional areas.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates strategic plan for Technical Operations group that supports the strategic vision of the company.
  • Performs all supervisory duties for Technical Operations team.
  • Conducts financial analysis for new projects (ex: Capital expenditure and ROI analysis).
  • Works with R&D and Supply Chain on technical transfer, product reformulations and material substitutions.
  • Conducts process monitoring activities, and performs machinery capability studies.
  • Conducts & leads production trouble-shooting, identifies and implements viable solutions.
  • Identifies and delivers advancements in continuous product/process improvements.
  • Continuously explores, identifies and develop innovative proprietary solutions and cost savings.
  • Lead or assist in CAPA or DOE activities.
  • Review formulations, MBR, Batch records, protocols, change controls and other process instructions to confirm capability and capacity.
  • Generate Process Qualifications Protocols (PQs) and perform Process Qualifications.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Operations and R&D on equipment selection process.
  • Perform Installation Qualifications (IQ) and Operational Qualifications (OQ) activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of all projects and assignments.
  • Complies with all Company policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and operates in a safe manner.
  • Perform other job duties related to the job, as assigned by management.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, education, and/or abilities required for the job:
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with high level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent root cause analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Proficient in creating formulation/process models, and solves complex problems.
  • Excellent planning & organizational skills and ability priorities and delegate to successfully manage numerous priorities.
  • Proficient knowledge of Company safety requirements, including GMP, SOPs, and OSHA regulations, applicable to the job.
  • Pro-active leadership skills (team-building, problem-solving, training, and coaching)
  • Knowledge and understanding of nutritional ingredients, product formulations and their claims.
  • Competent in interpreting and understanding scientific and technical literature and reporting findings in application oriented reports and presentations.
  • Thorough understanding of manufacturing, regulatory, supply chain and business implications of formulation decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and lead in a cross functional team environment.
  • Proficient PC skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, typing (min. 45-50 wpm)).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional, cooperative demeanor, and working relationship with peers, management, employees, and other individuals that interact with this position.
  • Ability to comply with Company policies, procedures, work rules, and protocols.
  • Ability to adapt effectively to workplace changes and new job duties/responsibilities.
  • Ability to represent the Company in a positive and professional manner at all times.

SELECTION GUIDELINES
The appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are achievable through the following combination of education, work experience and training:
  • Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field from an accredited college/university, Master's degree preferred; plus
  • Five (5) or more years of work experience in management/supervision in an industrial setting; or
  • Any combination of experience, education, and training that will provide the level of knowledge, skills, and ability required for the job.
  • Project management experience is a strong plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS
The essential functions of this job require the employee to work under the following environmental conditions, and physical requirements:
  • Communicates orally with employees, management, peers, customers, and compliance agency personnel, by telephone, e-mail, group or one-on-one settings.
  • Regularly uses a telephone, fax, and computer (e-mail) for communication.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time during course of work shift.
  • Routinely required to stoop, bend, kneel, lift, reach, pull, push, and tilt object in the performance of job function.
  • Lifting limitations for this position: 20-30 lbs. May have to manipulate heavier containers.
  • Requires use of hands, speech and hearing; agility to operate and frequently be exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and ability to adjust focus as needed/required.
  • Noise level in this work environment may be moderate to high depending on machinery usage. Some work areas require hearing protection for an 8-hour work day.
  • Occasionally exposed to dust fumes or airborne particles; required to wear appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and other safety equipment.
  • Periods of odoriferous environment.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Personal Protective Equipment provided as necessary.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to chemicals, solutions, detergents, or solvents that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to allergens such as Soy, Wheat, Fish, Shell Fish, Milk, Egg, Tree nuts, and Sesame.
