DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), a Spanish immersion school in Austin, Texas, is seeking a Director of Teaching and Learning. This person will provide leadership, coordination and facilitation in the development and implementation of curriculum. They will support faculty development and foster a culture of continuous improvement in teaching. The Director of Teaching and Learning will also lead the accreditation and authorization processes for the School’s programs.

Magellan is an authorized IB World School (PYP and MYP) and is accredited by Cognia for both Early Learning and K-5. The School serves a thriving intellectual community centered around the University of Texas and a high tech corridor, both of which are adjacent to the lovely hill country of Central Texas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum and Assessment:

  • Define a curriculum review cycle in collaboration with the academic leadership team.
  • Manage and provide leadership for the curriculum review process.
  • Ensure that data is gathered, analyzed and used to make decisions to improve learning and teaching.
  • Oversee school wide standardized testing (e.g. MAP Growth).
  • Oversee the development of common assessment practices and pacing.
  • Report to the community on assessment results.
  • Coordinate the review and selection of textbooks in collaboration with Section Heads and academic program coordinators.

Staff Support and Development:

  • Implement a mentoring program for new teachers and teaching assistants in collaboration with the Section Heads and Human Resources.
  • Monitor implementation of the teacher observation, feedback and assessment program.
  • Coordinate staff professional development opportunities to enrich teaching practices. This includes pre-service days, in-service days and continuing education.
  • Mentor instructional coaches and academic coordinators.

Accreditation and Authorization:

  • Oversee the Cognia accreditation processes for both Early Learning and K-8.
  • Serve on a Cognia review team at least once per academic year.
  • Plan and facilitate the PYP, MYP and DP authorization processes in collaboration with the IB program coordinators.

Other Duties:

  • Complete other tasks assigned by the Head of School.
  • Upon request, participate in the selection process for teachers and teaching assistants.

Supervisory Responsibility

The position oversees academic programming in collaboration with the Heads of Section and the Director of Innovation.

Required Qualifications

  1. University degree in Education or a closely related field.
  2. Five or more years experience as a classroom teacher (PK-12).
  3. Three or more years experience in an academic leadership position.
  4. Proven ability to lead teams and work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to develop and sustain productive relationships in a school community.
  6. Excellent communication skills - a good listener, speaker and writer.
  7. Experience working in a multicultural environment.
  8. Organized, patient, kind and flexible.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Education, or a closely related field, with a demonstrated interest in remaining at the forefront of educational trends
  2. Prior experience as a Curriculum Coordinator
  3. Experience with International Baccalaureate (IB) programs
  4. Academic proficiency in English and Spanish.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

“Core” work hours: 7:45 am to 5:00 pm. Availability during occasional nights and weekend events.

Travel

Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

A criminal history background check and federal fingerprint check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

If hired, you will be required to complete the federal Employment Eligibility Verification form, I-9. You will be required to present acceptable and original documents to prove your identity and authorization to work in the United States. Documents need to be presented no later than the third day of employment. Failure to do so will result in loss of employment at the school.
