Director of Safety and Security
The Director of Safety and Security oversees the safety, security, and related support services to all students, employees, visitors, and school property of Berkeley Preparatory School by collaboratively developing, establishing, and enforcing Safety and Security policies, access control procedures, fire safety, emergency management, asset protection, parking control and traffic enforcement programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the school’s mission statement and the philosophy of the department and adheres to school policies and procedures, including but not limited to what is outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- (Policy & Procedure) Cooperatively develops training and/or improvement plans to ensure effective operations and best practices in the area of Safety and Security management; reviews performance, develops skills and addresses any issues with the Director of Facilities Management.
- (Policy & Procedure) Cooperatively develops school policies pertaining to critical incidents such as fire, tornado, hurricane, and bomb threat procedures for approval by Administration; implements and coordinates preparedness drills to face such emergencies.
- (Policy & Procedure) Directs and manages Berkeley’s Safety and Security policies and procedures (Crisis Management Plan, VOLO, ALICE, etc.)
- (Training) Cooperatively directs the coordination of Safety, security and emergency preparedness assessments and training of students and employees.
- (Training) Provides oversight, evaluation and documentation for safety, security, and emergency preparedness training.
- (Training) Oversees hands-on drills and exercises fire, severe weather, and critical incident drills on a routine basis to test the school’s readiness to respond to crisis.
- (Compliance) Oversees school safety compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- (Compliance) Researches and analyzes national, state, and local emergency management regulations, designs, methods, and procedures and makes recommendations to school administration on changing requirements on an ongoing basis.
- (Compliance) Collaborates with the Facilities Management and Finance and Business Operations departments, as well as School insurance partners and federal, state, and local regulatory departments, to ensure compliance with regulations concerning workplace Safety and hazardous materials.
- (Investigation) Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations resulting in the identification, apprehension, and prosecution of those committing criminal acts against school students, employees, or property.
- (Investigation) Provides support to Divisional leadership in performing campus investigations using various techniques including interviews, observation, reviewing camera footage and reports back to the appropriate administrator.
- (Liaison) Serves as liaison between Berkeley Preparatory School and various emergency response agencies, such as Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. (Develop P&P to support this.)
- Heads the Crisis Management Team and provides leadership relating to campus issues of emergency management and safety issues.
- Oversees the creation and management of budgets for the Department of Safety and Security, including contract security agreement, HCSO coverage, etc.
- Demonstrates ability to manage frequent interruptions; varying and unpredictable situations; demands due to multiple calls and inquiries.
- Coordinates with Human Resources in support of certain personnel issues/meetings.
- Assists in the coordination of campus events.
- Coordinates with Divisions and Departments to schedule all non-Athletics transportation using in-house fleet and/or outsource companies.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Department Supervisor or their designee.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience relating to law enforcement or security management.
- Minimum requirement of 5 years’ experience in law enforcement and/or security management. Also, Florida Security Office Class D and Class G licenses, or the ability to earn said licenses within one year (at BPS expense).
- Must have the capability to plan, coordinate, analyze, execute and document specific administrative and management functions with a sense of the long-term goals of the department.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and supervise security personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to cooperatively work with school administration, faculty, staff, etc.
- Performance of job duties may require driving a school vehicle. If so, a current, valid driver’s license is required, as well as acceptance by Berkeley Preparatory School’s automobile insurance company.

Compensation and Benefits:
The appointment is available immediately and is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position and eligible for full benefits. The compensation package will be very competitive nationally and commensurate with experience, certification attainment, and the national independent school and college markets.
