The Director of Pharmacy plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates all activities and staffing providing pharmaceutical services within budget and in accordance with Federal, State, and JCAHO standards and in accordance with overall hospital policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Director of Pharmacy at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

ADMINISTRATIVE:
1. Prepares department, governmental agency reports and appropriate licensing renewal reports for New Jersey Board of Pharmacy, New Jersey Drug Enforcement Administration and United States Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
2. Oversees the pharmaceutical services at the Old Bridge Division.
3. Develops and revises the Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Manual.
4. Ensures the coordination and the delivery of drugs and parenteral products to nursing units and clinics.
5. Coordinates the patient charge system for drugs and parenterals dispensed for patient use.
6. Assists the Medication Use Committee in the development of Drug Utilization Review Program.
7. Responsible for publication and revision of Hospital Drug Formulary in conjunction with the Medication Use Committee.
8. Edits Pharmacy newsletter in conjunction with Pharmacy staff on at least a quarterly basis.
9. Serves as a member of specified committees: Safety Committee, Medication Use Committee, Poison Control Committee, Infection Control Committee, Nutritional Support Committee, and Product Evaluation Analysis and Review Committee.

BUDGET:
10. Prepares departmental budgets for expenses, revenue, capital equipment, and payroll hours in accordance with the administrative budget package.
11. Manages department expenses and revenues in accordance with the approved annual budgets. Submits variance justifications and other statistical reports as requested.
12. Recommends policy and procedure changes in conjunction with short and long range programs, systems and goals including planning for new facilities and renovation of existing facilities within budget.
13. Reviews and revises the schedule as determined by staffing patterns, work volume and budget allocation.
14. Supervises the participation in all group purchasing agreements.

QUALITY ASSURANCE / SAFETY
15. Develops and continually ensures that a planned, systemic and ongoing process for monitoring, evaluating, and improving departmental operations and systems and services are addressed through appropriate documentation and communication.
16. Ensures the proper use of the inpatient and outpatient medication profile system.
17. Receives and investigates the details of the adverse drug reactions and reports the results of ADRs to the Medication Use Committee in accordance with established procedures and submits reports to the Food and Drug Administration when necessary or as directed by the Medication Use Committee.
18. Supervises storing, handling, dispensing, and security of pharmaceuticals and supplies. Ensures that all drugs are removed from active accessibility whenever there is a drug recall and are returned in accordance with FDA regulations.

HUMAN RESOURCES
19. Interviews and selects new personnel, provides for orientation, evaluates performance, initiates salary changes, promotions, discharges, and all other personnel actions.
20. Ensures that all operating areas and personnel are in keeping with regulatory agency requirements and RBMC policies and procedures including but not limited to: New Employee Orientation Annual Safety/Emergency Preparedness Training, Equipment and Compliances, Accident/Incident Reports, OSHA Regulations.
21. Communicates, interprets, and discusses hospital policies and procedures with employees. Counsels employees on job-related problems. Discusses and settles grievances or refers to the Vice President as required.
22. Provides for continuing education and development of subordinate staff through formal or informal training, inservice, and other programs with documentation of plans, results, and mutual feedback.
23. Assists Staff Development in providing orientation for newly hired staff on a monthly basis.
24. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
25. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Five year degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy.
2. Minimum of five years of experience in Healthcare Pharmaceutical Services, in an administrative capacity.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
4. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. Master's Degree in Pharmacy.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Pharmacy Technician License.
