The Director of Drug Use Management & Clinical Pharmacy Programs responsibilities include development, standardization, and maintenance of Drug Use Management processes and pharmaceutical care based programs across the network. This includes all aspects of drug therapy with the ultimate goal being the achievement of optimal safe and effective medication use practices and clinical outcomes associated with disease, as well as achieving the best pharmacoeconomic course of therapy for all patients. Will collaborate with network physician leadership to optimize pharmaceutical spend in the inpatient environment. Will report directly to the Vice President of Network Pharmacy.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Director of Drug Use Management & Clinical Pharmacy Programs at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Operational:
- Works collaboratively across the system with physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals and staff within the health-system to identify strategic Clinical Pharmacy initiatives related to medication safety, drug utilization, clinical quality, and education. Examples of programs include Antimicrobial Stewardship.
- Reviews The Joint Commission standards and all State and Federal regulations regarding acceptable standards of practice and appropriate compliance in relation to these governing bodies.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of these programs from the pharmacy perspective for the system. These will include pharmacy/nursing/provider education, drug formulary management, drug therapy protocols, aligning of network policies and procedures, medication use evaluations, and pharmacoeconomic analyses.
- Coordinates the clinical representation of the Pharmacy Department on various health-system committees as required, including Network Medication Safety Committee, Network Pain Management Committee, Local P&T Committees.
- Will support creation and facilitation of the network P&T committee on a monthly basis, prepares the P&T agenda, while coordinating with clinical pharmacists the writing and presentation of drug monographs for review by the Formulary Review and network P&T Committees.
- Identifies opportunities to improve pharmaceutical use and grow Clinical Pharmacy programs and academic partnerships in the inpatient, ambulatory, long-term care, and outpatient settings.
- Maintains an environment that respects cultural, economic, ethnic, and lifestyle diversity of patients, visitors, and staff.
- Supports the Residency Programs within the network, including creation of system-level residency programs, recruiting, selection, and development of educational structure.
Liaison:
- Maintains Clerkship/Residency program with pharmacy schools.
- Participates in other committees as appointed.
Policy and Procedures:
- Responsible for working with pharmacy leadership to develop and update policies and procedures as they relate to pharmacy operations ensuring compliance with all regulatory and quality agencies. Human Resources
- Participates in departmental interviewing and provides feedback regarding a prospective employee prior to decision to hire.
- Participates in performance reviews.
Staff Development:
- Facilitates orientation and training of Clinical Pharmacy staff as needed
- Mentors staff, along with leadership, at all levels within the pharmacy to improve themselves and meet their personal goals.
- Supervises all aspects of the Clinical Pharmacy programs including other Clinical Pharmacy managers and pharmacists functioning in a clinical capacity. Evaluates the progress of the clinical programs across all divisions of the pharmacy service line and the performance of the clinical managers and Clinical Pharmacy specialists.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to staining, irritants or caustic chemicals, volatile and inflammable materials. May be exposed to body fluids, which could contain disease such as HIV, hepatitis B, etc. Questions or concerns should be directed to Employee Health or the Department Manager.
- Travel is expected to network locations.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- PharmD degree preferably with a residency or fellowship training, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 or more years of clinical experience in a hospital setting/ health system.
- Board certification.
- Residency Program Director experience.
- Management experience.
- Must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to deliver services in a manner that is appropriate to the client's age (neonate to geriatric), physical ability, and intellectual development.
- Maintain the necessary level of professional knowledge and technical proficiency in areas of functional responsibility, including maintaining state required continuing education.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Management experience in a matrixed organization is highly desirable
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Pharmacist Licensure in New Jersey State within 1 year of hire.
