Opportunity:

The Director of Learning and Development A4WHC (Action for Equity in History and Civics) is a full-time position funded by the Department of Education from December 2023 to October 2026. While Equal Opportunity Schools will work towards securing additional funding for the role beyond 2026, it is not guaranteed. If this meets your criteria, please apply. The Action for Equity in History and Civics (A4EHC) is an innovative teacher training and professional development model designed to support Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History (APUSH) and U.S. Government and Politics (GOPO) teachers and their students by fostering Conditions of Belonging to expand access and equity.

The Director of Learning and Development A4EHC will inform and guide the strategic vision for professional learning activities for the Action for Equity in History and Civics (A4EHC) partner Learning and practice, co-design A4EHC curricula and design, plan and track professional development for teachers around the A4EHC curriculum and use best practices learned to expand the program nationwide.

The annual salary range for this role is between $93,750 - $105,000 depending on your expertise and experience with similar roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall grant management process, including compliance, implementation, improvement and impact of the Action for Equity History and Civics professional learning network activities across partner district schools.
  • Serves as primary liaison between the DOE organization to ensure implementation of the grant with fidelity.
  • Evaluate quantitative and qualitative partner data – utilize feedback, insights, and learnings to develop a strategic vision and plan for the future of adult Learning and standardized practice.
  • Analyze the current national educational landscape against internal systems and practices for continuous improvement and adult learning – iterate on these systems and practices to increase retention, address the evolving needs of school-based partners, and prepare EOS for scaling the A4EHC Community of Practice.
  • Work closely with partnership districts/schools to build staff Community of Practice implementation and capacity.
  • Grow A4EHC Community of Practice network to be nationwide peer-to-peer support center for AP social science and history teachers.
  • Support at least 150 teachers over the three-year grant; offering an innovative professional learning program and Community of Practice national network of teacher engagement.
  • Develop the scope and sequence, curricula, and the arc of adult learning content and experiences for A4EHC participants for the following courses: Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History (APUSH), and U.S. Government and Politics (GOPO) designed to build equity and sustainability.
  • Center the scope and curricula on the concept of fostering Belonging to increase student participation and success in these courses.
  • Collaborate with existing school partners to build staff implementation capacity and then build upon successes and best practices to expand the program nationwide. Review and analyze data and reports, with a focus on trends and actionable insights.
  • Manage and coach Community of Practice (COP) team members.
  • Build inter- and cross-departmental bridges with the A4EHC team; align goals with the overall strategic plan; and communicate the A4EHC team's learnings, insights, and happenings to others within the organization.
  • Identify and leverage each team member’s strengths, career and lived experiences to achieve goals.
  • Coordinate with the organizations’ finance team and the Senior Director of Program and Partnerships to determine grant needs, create, and update grant plans.
  • Facilitate A4EHC equity-centered learning experiences, data analytics workshops, and Developmental activities for school leaders — which include educators, school administrators, superintendents, and district leadership.
  • Meet with Partnership Directors (managing a portfolio of school-based partners) regularly to understand and align A4EHC learnings to regional needs and the evolving landscape and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners in efforts to facilitate the grant successfully.
  • Work closely with partnership organizations to build staff community of practice implementation capacity; build upon successes and best practices from originating districts to eventually expand the program nation-wide.
  • Ensure that the A4EHC results in improved learning outcomes for students and develop modes for the tracking of professional development impact.
  • Develop a strategy for the monitoring of grantee performance.
  • Work with key internal teams to develop systems for on-going analysis and evaluation of effectiveness of program activities.
Requirements/Skills:
  • Master’s or advanced degree in education or related subjects preferred; we will consider strong lived and work experience in the communities we seek to serve in lieu of a degree.
  • 3+ years of managerial experience. 5+ years of related professional experience in establishing credibility with key stakeholders and leading with a compelling racial equity lens.
  • Strong relationship builder who can maintain complex external relationships with district/school leadership and partner organizations, as well as complex internal collegial relationships.
  • Significant experience working directly with school and district leaders to accomplish a shared task.
  • Skilled at leading with inquiry and modeling a reflective stance in addressing conflicts and navigating difficult situations with colleagues and partners.
  • Ability to apply a strong racial equity lens to complex decisions & situations, projects, and policies.
  • Experience developing and managing a program budget, with oversight from direct manager.
  • Skilled at making meaning of complex data to see the “big picture” as well as identifying actionable next steps.
  • Experience in K-12 curriculum development
  • The job requires travel, up to 50% of the time. A valid driver's license is required.
