Job Description
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking a Director of Human Resources. Our service area spans sixteen counties, in upstate New York, encompassing six regional offices. This position is based out of our AlbAny Office.

The Director of Human Resources will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resources (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization's mission and talent strategy. The HR Director will help build an organizational culture that supports the advancement of Legal Aid's mission and strategic plan. Reports to the Executive Director.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required, or the experience equivalent;
- At least five years of Human resource management experience;
- Substantial experience with DEIB initiatives and a commitment to a DEIB agenda; and
- Substantial payroll and HR software experience.
- Ability to travel both locally, within the service area in New York, and elsewhere as needed.
- Must have reliable transportation and driver's license.
- Must have a SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM®-CP) certificate, SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential or the equivalent.
Preferred Education and Experience
- A master's degree in human resource management;
- More than ten years' experience working in Human Resources;
- Experience with Unionized Staff, CBA and grievance procedures; and
- Multi-lingual, Spanish language a plus.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Manages HR department.
- Handles discipline and termination of employees per company policy, and the CBA.
- Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, & training initiatives to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
- Administers or oversees the administration of Human resource programs including, but not limited to, recruitment, retention, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; onboarding/offboarding and training and development.
- Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Works closely with the Chief Diversity Officer/Race Equity Director (CDO/RED) in implementing DEI policies, and initiatives.
- Mediates personnel disputes and assists, as requested, in the resolution of Union grievances.
- Implements and maintains a Human Resource Management System (HRIS) to track critical data for recruitment, onboarding, and retention.
- Develops and implements departmental budget.
- Performs other duties as required.

Work Environment
This position operates in a professional law office environment and occasionally may require the carrying of items of up to 20 pounds. This role requires the use of standard office equipment and software and remote videoconferencing platforms.
