Job Summary

The External Relations team at Harvard Business School (HBS) is dedicated to strengthening the lifelong relationship between alumni and the School by delivering meaningful engagement and learning and by inspiring philanthropy that supports and extends the HBS mission of educating leaders who make a difference in the world. We recently combined the former major gifts and Principal Gifts teams into a single group to better leverage the strengths and synergies of these teams and to more accurately reflect the donor constituency and the work that is possible in an HBS context.
We now seek two seasoned fundraising leaders to help our Principal Gifts team build from a foundation of success to expand philanthropic efforts and impact at the School. Each Director of Development, Principal Gifts will provide managerial leadership on the newly combined Principal Gifts team. Reporting to the Senior Director ofPrincipal Gifts, they each will manage 5+ experienced team members who are responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding key prospects for the School’s philanthropic priorities, including annual HBS Fund support.
This person will collaborate closely with leaders within Development and across External Relations and the School (including the Dean, Senior Associate Dean, and faculty) to develop donor-centered fundraising strategies that will help advance HBS’s priorities and mission. In addition to managing their direct reports, each Director will hold their own portfolio of key prospects.

Position Description

Responsibilities Include:
  • Manage 5+ principal gift officers in all aspects of their work to generate significant philanthropy from HBS alumni and friends, including formulation of individual goals and tracking ongoing progress towards fundraising objectives.
  • Promote a culture of coaching, accountability, and continuous improvement to ensure both fundraising success and the individual professional growth and development of each team member.
  • Provide thought leadership and work collaboratively to develop and advance short and long-term goals, priorities, and strategies for HBS fundraising.
  • Manage a portfolio of key prospects to advance their relationship with the School and philanthropic support for HBS priorities.
  • Foster collaboration and clear communication between the principal gift officers and other partners across External Relations, including Reunion & Leadership Giving, Gift Opportunities and Donor Relations.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10+ years of experience in principal gift fundraising/campaign work or related experience is required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, empower, manage, and mentor experienced fundraising professionals.
  • Previous experience managing a team and preferably at a higher education organization or similarly complex institution
  • Results-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, adapts easily to change, and has strong judgment.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating productive, collaborative relationships with faculty, board members, alumni, students, and/or staff within a complex organization.
  • Credibility as a successful high-level fundraiser with a track record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding Principal Gifts (6-7 figure+).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to relate to colleagues, donors, volunteers, and senior HBS leadership.
  • Must be able to consistently exercise diplomacy and discretion.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to excellence, as well as an ability to admit mistakes and forgive faults in others.
  • Must have a natural affinity for collaboration, leading through influence, and a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Must be drawn to a challenge and exhibit patience in advancing solutions across a complex and highly matrixed organization.
  • Ability to undertake travel

Additional Information

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus 2 days per week. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
