The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University's missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. Support a community environment that is welcoming, safe, and secure. Assist students in meeting their basic needs for housing, nutrition, and physical and emotional well-being. Provide the means for students to become active participants and leaders in their own learning. Assist students in developing logical thought processes and sound decision-making skills. Assist students in developing an appreciation of the arts. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is a major component of Student Affairs. The department supports and encourages balanced, healthy lifestyles for the diverse ECU community by providing leadership development through educational and recreational programs. CRW is committed to providing exemplary student leadership experiences, enhancing individual potential, developing responsible citizenship, and fostering a lifelong commitment to learning skills associated with physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.
Job Duties
The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team. The Director supervises the total administration and operation of the department as well as the development and implementation of long-range strategic plans. That responsibility includes oversight of twelve different program areas, fiscal management of all departmental budgets, and recruitment, hiring and training of all professional and support staff. Additionally, this position is responsible for capital planning, construction, operation, staffing, and maintenance of the Student Recreation Center (150,000SF), Blount Recreation Fields (18 Acres), the North Recreational Complex (129 acres with 60 developed), Alpine Climbing Tower, and a new recreation center (20,000 SF) on the Health Sciences Campus.
The Director is responsible for the department's business/financial affairs including annual budgets administered amount to approximately $15 million dollars ($8.4M Operating Funds and $6.3M Capital Reserves Funds). Sound fiscal budgetary projections and oversight are provided to all departmental budgets.
The Director recruits, trains, motivates, and supervises the full-time staff of approximately twenty (20) individuals who manage and support this department in addition to more than 300 student employees The Director is responsible for formulation and implementation of all program policy and total budget administration and management. The Director works collaboratively with Student Affairs assessment personnel to develop a comprehensive and collaborative culture of evidence related to student leadership development and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. This involves collaboration with numerous academic departments as well as other departments/units within Student Affairs to provide benchmark data related to leadership, healthy lifestyles, and student retention. A concerted effort has been initiated in the area of strategic planning for the department as it relates to the mission and strategic initiatives of the university. The Director serves on a number of committees, both within Student Affairs and the university.
The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness is responsible for providing an extensive offering of recreational programs and services for university students, faculty and staff. With assistance from support and professional staff, the Director plans, administers, and supervises departmental programs, which include men's, women's, and co-recreational intramural sports activities, informal recreation, club sports, physical activity and fitness programs and classes, campus wellness, member and customer services, adventure programs, non-credit instructional classes, aquatics and safety services, special events, youth and family programs, team training and leadership development, and adapted recreation.

The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness oversees administration and management for these units:
Informal Recreation: an opportunity for self-directed spontaneous participation in gymnasium free play, aquatics, weight training and cardiovascular fitness, and indoor climbing.
Intramural Sports: over forty organized sports, tournaments, and special event activities for the University community.
Extramural Competition: sport participation between other colleges and universities, on a local, regional and national basis.
Club Sports: special interest activities organized into clubs for recreational and competitive participation both on- and off-campus.
Campus Wellness: a variety of program offerings, workshops, and presentations related to health and Wellness, including alcohol education, nutritional information, sexual health, and stress management.
Non-Credit Instructional Classes /Lifestyle Enhancement: a variety of clinics, classes and workshops offered to the university community requiring registration but providing no college credit. Offerings include group fitness, self-defense, aqua fitness, weight training, yoga, etc.
Physical Fitness/Activity Programs: a number of programs are designed to increase muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance while maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Adventure Programs: programs are designed to provide experiences to enjoy the natural surroundings via the use of equipment and information specific to outdoor activities, and by participation in adventure trips, workshops and clinics.
Marketing: the department takes pride in extensive utilization of publicity mediums including social media, internet, campus newspaper, radio, television, posters, brochures, handbooks, clothing, awards, etc.
Adapted Recreation: individualized recreational and fitness opportunities are designed for the handicapped population at the University.
Team Training and Leadership Development: initiative games, low and high elements, and professional staff working together to create opportunities for groups to become more effective teams, enhance communication, and value diversity.
Aquatics and Safety Services: in association with the American Red Cross, courses in community first aid, CPR, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Lifeguard Training, as well as child swim lessons, are offered.
Youth and Family Programs: a variety of programs and services to dependents of SRC members, non-member faculty and staff, and individuals in the community.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum of a master's degree in recreation/athletic administration, physical education, or a related field.
At least seven years of progressive experience at the collegiate level in intramural-recreational sports required.
Previous experience involving basic administrative and management skills in planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting and budgeting is essential.
Extensive experience in personnel management and administrative decision-making is essential.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty, including active collaboration with senior administrators of the university and appropriate community and business personnel.
Demonstrated capacity for clear, cogent communication
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Experience in planning and construction of major capital projects is desirable.

Experience with wellness education and programming is desirable.
