Job description

The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus. Anticipated begin work date is April 2024 or thereafter. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until a candidate has been selected for hire.
The Senior Associate Director for Campus Recreation and Wellness (CRW) is a member of the CRW leadership team serving as second in command for the department and is responsible for operational oversight of the Campus Recreation Center and Reid Pool facilities, student development, risk management, and business operations.
Generalized responsibilities include:
Facilities Management (45%)
  • Direct management of the Campus Recreation Center and indirect management of Reid Pool, including daily operations, business functions, facility maintenance and enhancements, equipment purchasing and maintenance, and policy development
  • Oversee the Fusion software package for the department and serve as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting, training, and configuration.
  • Serve as primary scheduler for all reservations for the Campus Recreation Center and secondary scheduler all other CRW facilities
  • Develop, manage, and ensure effectiveness of all emergency action plans for CRW facilities including the Campus Recreation Center
  • Oversee all maintenance and housekeeping projects, both short term and long-term projects, in CRW facilities to ensure that the facilities meet expectations


Personnel Management (25%)
Directly supervise the following professional staff (5 FTE), including recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating:
  • Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness
    • Oversight of group exercise programming, personal training services, fitness equipment selection and policies
  • Assistant Director of Memberships and Business Operations
    • Oversight of facility front desk operations, all business functions for department, and coordination of memberships for the department
  • Aquatics and Facility Operations Coordinator
    • Oversight of all aquatic staff (lifeguards and swim instructors) programming including swim lessons, aqua classes, contracted community groups, and all American Red Cross certification classes
  • Facilities Maintenance Technician
    • Provide maintenance to all fitness equipment, and outdoor gear equipment for the department. Assist with all outdoor facility maintenance needs for the CRW Fields and Trail System.
  • Building Environmental Service Technician
    • Daily cleaning of the Campus Rec Center including special projects and deep clean schedules.
Directly supervise the following student staff including recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating: CRC Supervisors and Student Housekeepers (approx. 20 student staff)

Student Development (10%)
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive student development plan for CRW student workers
  • Coordinate the departmental hiring process for all student staff and ensure compliance with human resource guidelines
  • Lead departmental student staff training efforts to include planning, logistics, communication, execution, and evaluation
  • Oversee departmental student staff recognition and awards initiatives, and plan special events to celebrate award winners

Business Operations (10%)
  • Supervise student and professional staff responsible for daily business operations including point of sale transactions, purchasing, travel, reconciliations, budgeting, etc.
  • Ensure that all departmental business operations follow university and state policies and procedures
  • Assist with annual university budget preparation and presentation to include budget review, budget forecasting, and annual needs

Departmental Responsibilities (10%)
  • Serve as a member of the CRW Senior Leadership Team and act on behalf of the Director in their absence
  • Assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of strategic initiatives and activities related to the department
  • Lead assessment initiatives for the department including data collection, reporting, and assessment structure
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Discretion and Independence of Actions
The Senior Associate Director is expected to work autonomously and professionally in all areas of responsibility to reflect the mission of the Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness and the overall University. The Senior Associate Director must be able to function independently in the assigned areas of responsibility. The Senior Associate Director interacts with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and members of the Jackson County Community while representing Campus Recreation and Wellness and Western Carolina University.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Sport Administration, Education, or a related field of study
  • Must have current American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date
  • Must have demonstrated ability to develop successful relationships and partnerships with students, faculty, and staff

Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous demonstrated experience and knowledge of fitness and aquatic programming, business operations, and facility management within a collegiate setting.
