About Indiana Department of Correction (DOC):

Role Overview:
You will serve as an educational expert, parallel with a public school superintendent, in providing leadership to the IDOC Education Services Division. Generally, duties include the coordination of correctional education needs in providing educational opportunities and library services for offender students in Indiana Department of Correction facilities.
Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends in a broad range of educational areas ranging from literacy to post-secondary Education and job training. Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws relating to administration of Adult basic Education and career technical education. What You'll Need for Success:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Education, Medical, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or related field.
  • Five years' experience in appropriate fields (criminal justice, corrections, social work, education, med Above average knowledge of the principles and practices of strategic/long range planning and public administration practices
  • Above average ability to manage, supervise, organize, collaborate, coordinate and motivate a diverse staff
  • Ability to abide by the Department's Standard of Conduct, the State's Code of Ethics, and all departmental behavior expectations.
  • Understanding of basic grant writing principles, budgeting, and submission requirements.
  • Facilitates the IDOC Education Services Division vision, mission, philosophy, short- and long-range goals and monitors facility educational goals and performance objectives
  • Designs, implements and maintains a uniform and effective system of educational evaluation
  • Determines the educational levels and types of educational services at each IDOC facility
  • Facilitates a comprehensive educational program for eligible offenders
  • Administers federal grant programs and determines distribution of funds
  • Interprets federal government policies and monitors use of Adult Basic Education, Special Education, Title I, and other state and federal grant funds to ensure compliance.
  • Develops, plans, and coordinates contracts and communicates with colleges and universities to offer post-secondary degree programs within facilities.
  • Provides technical assistance and serves as an educational resource to peers and staff
  • Assists facilities in recruitment of education staff and interviewing for educational administrator positions
  • Responds, as appropriate, to written and oral educational issue inquiries
  • Monitors academic and vocational educational duties and workloads to ensure planning for sufficient staff to meet American Correctional Association, Correctional Education Association, Indiana Department of Education and Indiana Department of Workforce Development standards
  • Supervises and facilitates the annual employee performance appraisals of the Adult Coordinator, Juvenile Coordinator, and Education Services Secretary.
  • Assesses skills and contributes input to the annual employee performance appraisal of facilities' educational administrators
  • Facilitates and monitors IDOC educational, recreational, and law libraries.
  • Facilitates a department-wide standard curriculum for the various juvenile and adult vocational and academic educational courses.
  • Facilitates division staff development program and recommends to the IDOC Director of Training staff development and in-service education programs
  • Monitors IDOC educational and library policies, prepares guidelines and directives for academic and vocational education programs.
  • Represents the Education Services Division in IDOC Division meetings
  • Represents IDOC Education Services Division at national, state, and local conferences, workshops, committees, and meetings.
  • Monitors educational program goals through evaluation of personnel, policies, contacts, and budgetary needs
  • Prepares requests for proposals for contracted services, assisting in determining successful vendors, negotiating, and monitoring contract compliance
  • Prepares reports and budgets, maintains records, evaluates, and allocates facilities' educational budget requests.
  • Uses computers and related technologies to process information.
  • Performs related duties assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
