Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Function as Director/Curator of the School of Art and Design galleries, the Paul Vickers Glass Collection, and the Kyocera Museum of Fine Ceramics
- Provide and innovative vision and present the galleries/museum as a transformative vehicle to spark inquiry and engage the University community and public through the presentation of diverse and robust year-round programming, recruiting, curating and projects while partnering to shape and further institutional goals
- Develop and maintain galleries/museum-wide strategic goals, systems, programming, policies, and procedures
- Manage operations including the continuation of a revenue generating opportunities for the Cohen Gallery Shop
- Work alongside preparator as needed to meet deadlines
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with all organizations in the University community and beyond; seek new partnerships and beneficial collaborations both locally and regionally
- Use social media and other emerging technology to engage users
- Lead efforts to initiate, write, and submit grants for gallery initiatives; cultivate donors and maintain relationships
- Hire and supervise staff (graduate students, FT & temporary staff and undergraduate students) and interns as appropriate
- Serve on college and University committees as appropriate
- Collaborate with university stakeholders towards the integration of the galleries/museum in the pedagogical mission of the greater university
- Teach one course and two workshops each fall and spring
- Supervise the care, maintenance, and security of facilities
- Determining and implementing museum and gallery policies, managing staff concerns; Overseeing long range planning strategic planning
- MFA or PhD m related field
- Five years of professional related experience working in a gallery or museum
- Experience in teaching, working with students, and/or mentoring
- Demonstrated commitment to cultural competences and enhancing inclusion, diversity, equity and access
- Knowledge and aptitude in art handling best practices
- Ability to work both autonomously and collectively as needed
- Experience working in an academic environment or in collaboration with academic partners
- Demonstrated ability to craft an innovative vision for the galleries, including formulating a strategic plan for the of exhibits /projects/programs across campus, developing a fresh perspective and initiating new projects to engage existing and broader constituencies in meaningful experience
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with faculty, students, and staff; and ability to establish partnerships with key external organizations and/or leadership to develop dynamic collaborations, interdisciplinary approaches, and expanded audiences
- Experience in a museum or gallery, with a proven record of effective communication, staff supervision, and budget expertise
- A record of assisting with or accomplishing successful fundraising, including soliciting gifts, overseeing events, and writing grants
- The ability to articulate and present information to various and diverse audiences
The Fosdick Nelson gallery, a 1500 sq gallery, the Turner Gallery, a 2800 sq student programed gallery and the Cohen gallery, a I 000 sq gallery/storefront in the village of Alfred.
The School of Engineering galleries and museum includes two spaces. The Kyocera Museum, a 1400 sq gallery offering information on ceramic materials and applications, including historical developments, technical breakthroughs and examples of how ceramics have become ubiquitous as enabling technology in everything from electronics to more specialized applications like fuel cells, solar panels and biomedical implants. The Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Collection is to be housed in a 1200 sq gallery and offer educational programming space. The new director will be charged with the development of this space.
Reporting staff includes a full-time preparator, salaried graduate student employees, interns, and hourly student workers. The position reports to the deans of the School of Art and Engineering
