Job description

The Director of Nursing Outpatient Clinics provides administrative oversight to the nursing clinical practices in the ambulatory clinics of MyMichigan Medical Group (MMG) and provides assistance to the Clinic Manager in the development, organization, implementation and evaluation of nursing clinical best practices. The Director is responsible and accountable for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in the ambulatory setting. The Director also provides administrative oversight to the MMG Vaccine Program and ensures a uniformed approach is taken in MMG for implementation of new vaccines and or immunizations while working towards meeting current State of Michigan and local Health department requirements. Additionally, the director ensures that clinical nursing care is provided by qualified and competent nurses, medical assistants and patient care technicians and oversees the PCT Program, non-certified medical assistant grow your own program and annual skills day. The Director leads the MMG Policy Committee to ensure adequate representation and policy review occur with subject matter input. The Director develops and implements standard orientation and onboarding tools for MMG nurses, medical assistants and PCTS. The Director also attends new hire orientation to speak on nursing clinical practices and annual education within MMG.

Develop, lead and sustain Pathways to Potential across MMG clinics. Responsible for coordinating Shared Governance within the MMG outpatient clinics through education, facilitation and integration with the MyMichigan System Nurse Executive Council.

The Director attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings. Collaborates with quality and patient safety department to evaluate and establish care improvement strategies to optimize care delivery.

Provides additional nursing staff education on-site in coordinator with Clinic Manager outreach. They also serve as role models of effective patient-centered care and inspire new nurses to safely provide quality care. By sharing their expertise and offering support, they enable new nurses to become competent practitioners.

Maintains expert knowledge of current ambulatory clinical nursing requirements and ensures organization awareness and success. Collaborates with all MidMichigan Health subsidiaries on their journey to Magnet designation.

Additionally, the director uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The Director attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence-based practice and research findings.


(25%)*Leads and assumes organizational responsibility for all aspects of the MMG Pathways to Excellence, designation and re-designation processes. Develops plan to ensure compliance and maintenance with requirements and annual reports.

(25%)*Functions as primary MMG Nursing educator for clinical support staff and standard educational programs related to Skills Day, the PCT Program and the Certified Medical Assistant Grow Your Own Program.

(25%)*Leads and assumes organizational responsibility for the MMG Vaccine Program, MMG Policy Committee and represents MMG on the VAT committee to ensure streamlined use of testing, equipment, medications, vaccines and immunizations.

(25%)*Establishes and maintains effective relationships with nursing leadership and all staff to ensure achievement of goals related to MMG Safety and Quality initiatives and benchmark standards. Mentors leadership team members to ensure the development of enhanced knowledge related to clinical nursing best practices.

Fosters shared decision making in nursing by implementing strategies and infrastructure to guide and support nurse leaders and nursing staff towards a successful and sustainable Nursing Shared Governance Model and Professional Practice Model.

Collaborates in the design process of programs in collaboration with CNO and nurse leaders to support professional development related to BNS education advancement and national certification of all nurses.

Experience, Training and Skills:

Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through five years experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting

Knowledge of nursing management as normally acquired through three years or greater experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting. Leadership skills needed to effectively lead a group and manage project implementation.

Must demonstrate strong management and organizational skills. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, strong leadership abilities, and be able to generate enthusiasm for the successful completion of this project.

Needs to provide regular progress reports with recommendations to the nursing management team and department heads.

Project management experience required with exceptional written and oral communication skills demonstrated in past positions.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
