Job Summary Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) invites applications for the position of the inaugural Director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Sustainability (IESS), a position equivalent to a department chair. The initial appointment will not involve any direct faculty supervisory duties. The Director will be appointed as a full-time faculty member in the School of Science and Technology and will be encouraged to remain active as a scholar and teacher, with strategic leadership of the Institute as their top priority. The Director reports to the dean of the School of Science and Technology. This is a renewable administrative faculty position (e.g., a 12-month schedule), with a start date of July 1, 2024. The IESS has been designed to include faculty and staff from across the College. It currently consists of 11 faculty affiliates who hold interdisciplinary appointments across two GGC Schools, with expertise in five disciplines, and it offers baccalaureate degrees in Environmental Science with natural and social science concentrations. The interdisciplinary structure of the Institute mirrors best practices in sustainability education as it guides students toward a holistic understanding of the geographical, ecological, cultural, chemical, economic, and policy elements that are critical for a complete understanding of a sustainable environment. The Director will lead the Institute alongside a faculty rank Academic Coordinator, with the support of the Environmental Science faculty affiliates. The inaugural Director is responsible for strategically leading the Institute, shaping its mission and vision, recruiting engaged faculty and students interested in the Institute¿s work and degree programs, while overseeing administrative operations of the Institute. Working with the Institute¿s faculty affiliates, the Director must have the capability to effectively manage budgets and facilities (including a microfarm), oversee curriculum development, secure external grants, and carry out other Institute leadership functions. The Director will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and maintain a wide range of campus and community programming, events, and outreach to drive student enrollment, program growth, and innovation. Review of applications will begin January 08, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Environmental Science, or a closely related field, with the experience and documented achievements appropriate for consideration of an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
Preferred Qualifications
  • An entrepreneurial mindset for sustainable operation and growth of the Institute;
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, including a well-developed sense of fairness and integrity; demonstrated effectiveness in working with and leading interdisciplinary teams; preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of higher education leadership experience at the program level or higher;
  • A record of effective teaching, service, student engagement, and scholarly activity within the candidate¿s area of specialization;
  • A commitment to fostering academic excellence.
