A Brief Overview
The Director of Health Information Management is responsible for coordinating all Health Information Management (HIM) and Transcription services for the hospital and clinic teams, including serving as a liaison for all clinics and the Flint Hills Campus team
Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Health Information Management or a related field. Preferred

Experience Qualifications
  • 5 years HIM experience. Required

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of information systems and healthcare applications in addition to database applications and report writing software. (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge and experience in information privacy laws, access, ROI, and release control technologies. (Required proficiency)
  • Knowledge in and the ability to apply the principles of HIM, project management, and change management. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated organization, facilitation, communication and presentation skills. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Health Informaiton Admistrator - AHIMA Required

What you will do
  • Directing the HIM and Transcription functions of the health system and encourage team members to practice SV Tenets and Small Moments.
  • Support and facilitate clinical, administrative, and internal/external data use functions for strategic planning and quality improvement activities by means of the PEPPER report and audit outcomes.
  • Create, document and enforces HIM policies and procedures for release of information (ROI), Mayo eConsults, HIM confidentiality, record storage and retrieval, and record retention.
  • Provide education and training to employees in areas relevant to HIM policies and procedures. Provide orientation to new physicians regarding HIM processes and the importance of precise, accurate documentation with timely completion. When approved by Talent Acquisition, coordinate HIM students for their Professional Practice Experience, assigning meetings with areas such as IT, Medical Staff Services, Registration, CDI, Quality, and other areas as time allows.
  • Work with organization senior management, Risk Management, Integrity and Compliance to address compliance issues. Serves as a member of the Integrity and Compliance Committee, assisting with maintaining proper oversight of the organization and business practices.
  • Serves as a member of the Denials Committee and the Utilization Management (UM), an interdisciplinary administrative committee for hospital and system utilization review.
  • Serves as the Chair of the SVH Forms Committee for reviewing, approving revised forms, and oversee their creation, use, retention, appraisal and disposal. Serves as the main contact for coordinating record storage for all clinics, Topeka Campus, and Flint Hills Campus for offsite storage and retrieval. Serves as a member of the Washburn University HIT (Health Information Technology) Advisory Board.
  • Monitor local, national, and international trends in healthcare delivery and changes in legislation and accreditation standards that affect the HIM Department and health system.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable federal and state privacy laws and accreditation standards, and monitors advancements in information privacy technologies to ensure organizational adaptation and compliance.
  • Responsible for recommending revisions of the Medical Record section within the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations in coordination with the Joint Commission, CMS and other regulatory organizations.
  • Works closely with other departments including but not limited to CDI, IT, Case Management, Physician groups, and Nursing Teams, Flint Hills Campus and other Clinics in relation to various HIM processes.
  • Daily review of the HIM Accounts Receivable (A/R) with tracking of providers not compliant. Review and improve various provider documentation processes in coordination with the Clinic Coding Service director.
  • Participates in the build and deployment of HIM and Transcription related technology. Monitor the systems and set the standards for data quality and ethical practice. Work together with outside vendors to implement and/or improve HIM workflows such as with the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Transcription, Coding and ROI.
  • Lead the HIM team in PEX deployment, looking for opportunities to track and reduce duplicity and waste; continued offering of suggestions and opportunity for improvements.
  • Serves ad hoc for the Human Trafficking (HT) committee, including review of policies, coding/documentation updates, and issues within our organization and community.
  • For communication purposes, a minimum of weekly meetings with all direct reporting staff, or more often when necessary. Calculate the weekly AR Update report for SVH admin leadership group tracking specific physician groups with outstanding records.
