Department Overview

OHSU is Oregon's only public academic health center. We are a system of hospitals and clinics across Oregon and southwest Washington. We are an institution of higher learning, with schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health - and with a network of campuses and partners throughout Oregon. We are a national research hub, with thousands of scientists developing lifesaving therapies and deeper understanding. We are a statewide economic engine and Portland's largest employer. And as a public organization, we provide services for the most vulnerable Oregonians, and outreach to improve health in communities across the state.

 

The Director of Equity and Opportunity leads the implementation of organization wide DE+I strategies across OHSU. They serve as subject matter expert and change agent to facilitate achievement of short-and long-term goals in alignment with the OHSU strategic plan. The Director works closely with organization and people leaders, teams and groups across OHSU to make meaningful progress on DE+I strategies. They build and support community and partnerships locally and nationally to establish OHSU's brand presence in diverse communities. The Director reports to the Vice President of Equity, Opportunity and Experience.

Function/Duties of Position
  • This individual partners with the Talent team on DE+I data analysis to ensure organizational leaders understand the insights and can create meaningful action plans for change.
  • Community and Partnerships: proactively cultivate, develop, and support strategic partner relationships nationally and locally to create a robust and effective OHSU brand presence in diverse communities.

  • Serves as a DE+I subject matter expert and change agent for OHSU leading the strategic implementation of an organizational-driven companywide DE+I strategy that includes short- and long-term goals, KPI's, action plans and metrics.

  • Establishes clear targets and measures to track meaningful progress over time.

  • Develops data-driven DE+I vision that is grounded in OHSU's objectives of inspiring and relevant DE+I future state.
  • Provides coaching to organizational/people leaders to develop individual DE+I objectives and performance metrics that support the company's overall strategy.
  • Conducts on-going research on best practices, and recommends strategies to achieve sustained change.

  • Provides coaching and direction to local DE+I Committees to drive execution of DE+I initiatives.

  • Actively participates on OHSU DEI Learning content and culture team to influence action items and ensure accurate representation of OHSU's DE+I objectives and progress.

  • Executes a sustainable plan for DE+I ERGs to engage and motivate employees.

  • Partners with analytics on the design and execution of DE+I data packages for OHSU's Executive and Senior Leadership Teams and Board of Directors.

  • Counsels OHSU leaders on the strategies, messaging and tactics that positively position OHSU executive leaders as true DE+I advocates.

  • Facilitates discussions to provide an open forum for thought leadership and collaboration among employees.

  • Collaborates with the Communications team to create cohesive communications campaigns that engage our workforce and effectively convey our DE+I strategy both internally and externally.

  • Sources DE+I educational content and speakers/panelists for the OHSU Conversation Series and Senior Leadership training.

  • Promotes education and cultural awareness during commemorative months, including African American/Black History Month, Women's History Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, National American Indian Heritage Month, etc.

  • Represents OHSU at virtual/external forums and serve as a subject matter expert at diversity conferences, professional associations, and meetings.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources or related field or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years in the HR/DE+I field with increasing scope and responsibilities for developing and leading large-scale diversity strategies

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven track record of successfully leading and championing large scale diversity and change management initiatives leveraging a network of passionate volunteers and company leaders (e.g. BRG leaders, DE+I Committee leaders, etc.); working with Talent teams to strategize, develop/implement effective DE+I recruitment to improve OHSU's diverse talent pipeline and increase diverse hires; Partners with platform and market leaders to strengthen relationships with targeted university and industry organizations to attract and retain diverse, multi-generational talent (i.e., HBCUs, TCUs, NABJ); Partnering with platform and market leaders to strengthen relationships with targeted university and industry organizations to attract and retain diverse, multi-generational talent (i.e., HBCUs, TCUs, NABJ).
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with senior level leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills with extensive experience in communicating at the executive level.
  • Proven track record of leading in a matrixed environment, comfortable with ambiguity, able to quickly adapt and/or pivot in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of multicultural diversity, cultural competencies, and laws and regulations pertaining to equal employment opportunity.
  • Excellent project management/organizational skills with ability to prioritize and execute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Team).
  • Established relationships with local and national diversity organizations and partners.
  • A strategic and action-oriented leader who anticipates trends, creates competitive strategies, and implements plans for change.
  • Resourceful working leader who rolls up their sleeves to effectively collaborate and do the work.
  • Builds support, removes organizational barriers, and finds creative solutions to affect DE+I change.
  • Reframes or restructures problems in a different way, when necessary, to solve them.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Additional Details

Work is performed in office setting. Position will include occasional travel to conferences and events
