Direct Service Professional Job Description
Summary: The Direct Service Professional (DSP) will work with individuals with developmental disabilities. The DSP will assist individuals to become more integrated in their communities by maximizing the person’s strengths, interests, and abilities. The aim is for the person to direct their own activities that will create a meaningful life including contributing to the community and developing relationships.
Duties and Tasks:
- Perform personal care tasks, including but not limited to aiding with basic personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, mobility assistance, medical monitoring, and healthcare-related tasks.
- Ensure client safety and maintain a safe environment.
- Encourages self-help activities. Support people to choose, understand, and learn new skills.
- Perform home management functions such as light housekeeping, laundry, bed making, and cleaning.
- Plan meals, shop for groceries, prepare and serve food/meals, feed, and clean up.
- Assist with toileting, including bedpans, urinals, and commode chairs as necessary.
- Assist with hygiene care including bathing, grooming, oral care, etc.
- Transport and accompany the person served to scheduled appointments, running errands, authorized outings, etc.
- Document services provided. Understand, follow through, and document support plans, goals, activities, progress, etc.
- Report any changes in the person-served conditions or family situation to administrators/supervisors.
- Support people to achieve personal outcomes that characterize a high quality of life.
- Listen carefully and communicate respectfully and clearly with the people you support.
- Facilitate activities that provide people with social capital and connections to the community.
- Use person-first or preferred language when appropriate.
- Always maintain confidentiality and support privacy.
- Enforce CCS policies and procedures.
- Maintain compliance and competency in Relias and all certifications for job duties.
- Follow the assigned ISP.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Ability to work in a group home or a home-like setting.
- Communication skills (verbally and written) with all levels of personnel, internal and external to the organization.
- Ability to handle the physical aspects of the position, including bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for extended periods of time.
- Ability to support the person served to exercise their rights and responsibilities in all areas of their lives.
- Ability to engage in respectful communication. Advocate with the person served.
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver's license, acceptable driving history, and proof of unexpired auto insurance.
- Ability to successfully pass a mandatory drug screen and background screening.
- Interest in assisting individuals to achieve personal outcomes and to provide person-centered support.
- Must possess good verbal, reading, and written communication in English, basic math and computer skills.
- Ability and willingness to successfully complete and apply provided training.
- Ability and willingness to support individuals with challenging behavior.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $26,000.00 - $31,000.00 per year
Expected hours: 32 – 48 per week
