What Does a DSP Mental Health Worker Do?

Mental Health Workers engaged as a Direct Support Professional/Person (DSP) provide Direct Support professional services and independent living skills training to the individuals we serve in our 24-hour residential programs. These programs serve the needs of individuals in a home setting that is managed by RTI. The our clients include those with a severe mental illness (SMI) health diagnosis and or traumatic brain injury (TBI) disability.

What Can I Expect Working for RTI in this Role?

  • Day Shift from 7:00a-3:30p, Evenings 3:00p-11:30p, and Overnights 11:00p-7:30a

You will report to the program manager and have no direct reports. Above your Program Manager is a Director, and then the CEO. You can expect your day-to-day responsibilities to include:

  • Support individuals in independent living skills through 1:1 service.
  • Support individuals in Mental Health management through identifying coping skills, practicing coping skills, and alternative methods.
  • Teach and model community integration skills such as: self-managing medications, managing personal finances, appropriate interpersonal interactions, managing the public transportation system, completing the necessary tasks to maintain a home, and accessing community resources.
  • Interacts informally with individuals to facilitate socialization and appropriate behavior.
  • Participates in scheduled and spontaneous recreational events.
  • Teaches healthy living habits and develops the accompanying skills.
  • Work with a range of severe mental illness (SMI) diagnosis, including Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, PTSD, and others

Who is eligible to apply?

We encourage those with prior experience working with clients like ours to apply. Specific requirements include the following:

  • 1 year work experience working with those with a severe mental illness and or traumatic brain injury.
  • 18 years of age or older with a completed High School Diploma or it’s equivalent.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Human Services background check.
  • Ability to pass the BCA Criminal Background Check and the Sexual Exploitation of Patients by Psychotherapist screen required by DHS.
  • Ability to pass screening required by Federal Human Services office of the Inspector General
  • Ability to organize and work independently.
  • Willingness to travel within the Metro Area, for applicable mileage reimbursements, with a current driver’s license, clean record, and personal vehicle with insurance; and able to transport clients in that vehicle.
  • Possess a person-centered approach, consistent with the Philosophical approach of the individual program and RTI.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse populations.
  • Other, as needed, as company and role grows or evolves.
