EngineeringJob Description:
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
About the Role
Driveline Analysis (DLA) team of the Integrated Components & Solutions division is seeking a simulation candidate to support product and Virtual Product Development (VPD) technology development. Primary job responsibilities may include applications of machine driveline simulations to influence early product concepts and design decisions, to improve the existing products by resolving torsional vibration issues, and to develop or improve simulation related processes and technologies. Driveline Analysis (DLA) team uses simulation to quantify driveline dynamics. Concept drivelines are evaluated, and configuration changes are recommended as needed. As the driveline design matures, the team quantifies component loads. Risk areas are identified, which guides machine testing. DLA processes torsional machine data and uses that to correlate and improve driveline simulation models and techniques. The Driveline Analysis team assists in root cause identification and solution analysis as torsional product problems arise, both for new and existing product. DLA leverages torsional simulation to understand driveline sensitivities and solutions faster and cheaper than possible in test iron.
What You Will Do
- Use machine driveline models to execute torsional studies of driveline subsystems such as couplings and transmissions
- Use both simulation and test data to solve as well as avoid driveline torsional problems
- Construct and/or update 1D torsional mass-elastic models of machine drivelines; some models will be in frequency domain, and some will be non-linear and run in time domain
- Work will focus on periodic dynamic excitation, such as engines, downstream pumps, and driveshafts. Some work involves transient system analysis such as clutch engagements, engine misfire, or machine induced torsional loads. A combination of simulation and/or test data is used to gain insight into driveline transient events.
- Build driveline mass-elastic models in Dynasty from solid models and driveline component data (such as coupling technical specifications, installed driveshaft angles, and component torsional compliance); model details will be documented and traceable
- Understand and apply model loading conditions for mean loading in addition to periodic excitation in the frequency domain
- Document and communicate results, significant findings, and recommendations to mostly internal clients, such as upper powertrain design, lower powertrain design, machine design, and other internal driveline component design controls
- Correlate models to high-speed machine data for continuous simulation improvement and refinement
- Collaborate with design, test, other simulation groups, and torsional coupling suppliers
What You Have – Skills and Experiences
In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute your unique skills and experiences. Below are some of the most critical skills.
- Analytical skills, initiating ideas, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking capabilities
- Knowledge of engineering principles, theory, and engineering experience gained through projects, internships, and/or relevant work experiences
- Fundamental understanding of engineering for a manufacturing environment, ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention
- Ability to quickly gain, and effectively apply new skills & knowledge
- Success in collaborating with others of diverse cultures, interpersonal styles, and abilities
- Strong written, and verbal communication skills
- Participate in our inclusive, constructive, and productive work environment
Degree Requirements
- MS degree in Mechanical, Agricultural, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering with academic focus on multi-domain system dynamics with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 (no rounding)
Other Requirements
- Knowledge of design, test, or simulation in the areas of driveline, dynamics/vibration, or mechatronics
- Knowledge of solid modeling tools such as Creo
- Strong initiative, communication skills, customer focus, teamwork, planning skills and leadership experience (such as design/test activities or simulation projects)
Top Candidates will also have
- PhD degree in Mechanical, Agricultural, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering with academic focus on multi-domain system dynamics
- Experience simulating system dynamics using tools such as Dynasty, Simulink, or GT-Suite
- Experience with drivetrain, engines, or pumping equipment
- Experience in off road vehicle system design, test, or dynamics
- Experience in data or modal/vibration analysis using tools such as DatK, Matlab, or ME-scope
