Detention Officer - STARTING SALARY $53,245 PER YEAR

Individuals interested in joining our team should apply through the Collin County website at:

Collin County is seeking candidates for the position of Detention Officer. If you are patient, quick-thinking, and calm with good interpersonal and communication skills, we want to talk to you! You'll need a clean background, high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age to be considered for this position. Candidates with tattoos please see the tattoo section at the bottom of this posting.

A Detention Officer provides custodial care necessary for the security and well-being of inmates confined in the Collin County jail. Responsibilities include preparing inmates for transport to court appearances, processing new inmates, assisting victim’s advocates, supervising inmate visitation, distributing food to inmates, conducting security checks, overseeing inmate sentence calculation and releases by reviewing court commitments, handling control room operations, and reviewing and verifying inmates trust fund accounts. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Sergeant, Lieutenant or Captain.

What's the work environment like?

Our jail is fully air-conditioned, well-maintained, and has passed state jail inspection for 35 consecutive years. Passing the annual state jail inspection is no small feat. The inspection closely scrutinizes operations, policies, performance, record keeping, and the physical facilities; and it covers all aspects of inmate care, including admissions, jail-based diversion, suicide-risk screening, health care and infirmary, housing, recreation, food, education programs, cleanliness, fire safety, plumbing, and the kitchen.

Are you looking for an organization with opportunities for promotion?

There is plenty of room to move up (or over) from Detention Officer. The path in the Jail promotes to Jail Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and beyond to upper level Command staff. You can also test for Deputy Sheriff if you want to pursue the peace officer path; going from Deputy Recruit to Deputy Sheriff, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant and beyond. You can also move over to Dispatch if you find you're interested in communications. And, if you decide you like the Sheriff's Office but need a non-law enforcement role, we also employ people in a variety of support, clerical and administrative positions.

Collin County offers a fantastic benefits package including 200% retirement match (with employee contributions earning 7% interest!), 100% tuition reimbursement, affordable medical, dental and vision plans, 10 paid holidays annually, 24 days of PTO in your first year of employment with balance rollover from year-to-year, county-provided life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and other optional participation benefits. If you want a job that contributes to more than just a company’s bottom line or CEO’s annual bonus, this is the place for you!
