Job Summary:

The design engineer (DE) reports to the VP of engineering and is a member of the engineering team. The DE works with the sales and operations team to facilitate the highest levels of communication possible. The duties of this role fall into two categories and tasks; Sales Engineering (SE) and Build Engineering (BE). SE activities include working closely with the sales team and the end user to conduct a needs analysis for the system, generate a pricing quote and write a functional description and scope of work. These activities are prior to receiving a purchase order or notice to proceed. The SE is also responsible for creating costs and scopes of work relating to responding to RFP/Bid packages. BE activities include taking ownership of the approved quote from a design standpoint and creating the construction documentation for the operations team to use in staging, installing, commissioning and programming the system. Internal peer reviews and AV9000 (AQAV) checklists are part of the quality management system (QMS) and are a required part of the duties.

The ideal candidate supporting SE tasks has experience working with end users and technology managers to help develop the system requirements, document those requirements in both technical and non-technical written form and have a broad knowledge of product and design practices to create a bill of materials. The candidate will also have enough experience with operations to accurately estimate the labor requirements based on many variables.

The ideal candidate supporting BE tasks has experience and is an expert in the software tools required to document the construction and configuration requirements of the engineered system, including Excel, AutoCAD/Revit and BlueBeam/Adobe. The candidate will have extreme attention to the details required to fully document the system drawings and they understand the value of time saved designing systems fully to reduce troubleshooting in staging and in the field.

To be considered a DE III, the candidate/employee will possess and maintain industry standard design certifications including CTS-D, CQD and CQT.

DE II differentiators:

The list below is provided to define specific, yet subjective, activities which would distinguish the DE II from DE I and DE III.

· Act as primary client facing engineering contact for small to medium enterprise accounts, in general, over extended periods and across all facets of client technology planning related to work the company can perform.

· Act as secondary/supporting engineering contact as needed to support DE III managed enterprise accounts.

· Proven ability to manage and lead the technical Design and user experience planning for the majority of projects. May not yet have the expertise or leadership to manage the largest and most technologically complex projects.

· Act as primary technical resource for enterprise client system standardization of technology and user experience.

· Provide leadership and mentorship to junior team members within the department.

· Be an absolute champion of company processes, procedures and systems.

· Proven ability to act as the project engineer of record and manage a team of engineers responsible for producing the documentation required for a successful outcome. This organizational structure allows the DE II to lead more projects than a single engineer would otherwise be able to lead if they were also producing all the documentation themselves. This provides strong company representation to customers and knowledge transfer and training to less experienced engineers.

· Proven ability to assess and mitigate risk to the company as it relates to system designs, technologies, vendors, and system scopes. i.e. able to recognize risky designs or customers and bring those issues to management.

· Looked to as an SME across various technologies and best practices within the company.

· Proven ability to make high-quality decisions and operate with a high degree of autonomy.

· In general, the most challenging projects and customers may be managed by the DE III, but the majority of clients and systems should be within the skill set of the DE II.

Summary of Accountabilities (SE):

· Maintain broad exposure to industry product solutions for audio reinforcement, microphones, audio and video conferencing, video routing and distribution, IT/networking, control systems and equipment storage.

· Conduct detailed needs analysis with end users and their owner representatives, along with internal sales team, and communicate the functional requirements to eliminate scope issues during project deployment.

· Ability to navigate and understand architectural drawing packages to understand how AV systems integrate into the environment.

· Create written functional descriptions of the proposed systems, often for both technical and non-technical end users to understand and approve.

· Follow department process workflow when working through a sales opportunity.

· Maintain prompt and detailed communication with customers.

· Create both budgetary and guaranteed maximum price (GMP) bill of materials and labor costs.

· Create schematic design (SD) level sketches/drawings to facilitate accurate estimates and support engineering and operational activities once project has been sold. This is also to validate design principles like speaker coverage, viewing ranges and other best practices.

· Review consultant or owner specified RFP/Bid documentation packages and generate RFI’s, write scope of work and create project costs.

· Assist sales in presenting proposal packages to end users when required.

· Perform pre-sales site surveys using measurement tools to gather important information (ambient noise, ambient light, dimensions) about the space in question.

· Review sold systems with assigned Build Engineer and project managers during preliminary kick-off meetings.

· Ability to maintain consistent use of company standard solutions. Essentially, able to sell repeatable and known stable solutions and avoid selling untested solutions which slows down the operations and service departments.

· Perform AV9000 design reviews on other SE work.

· Be a subject matter expert (SME) on the majority of the following AV design categories:

· HDBaseT video switching and distribution

· IP-video switching and distribution (Crestron NVX, SDVoE, EvertzAV, etc.)

· Control system architecture

· USB 2.0 switching and distribution

· Soft codec system Design and user experience planning

· Polycom and Cisco conferencing design

· Microphone selection and planning for various environments

· Audio DSP design

· Directview LED

· Tiled video wall arrays

· Video wall processing

· Participate in departmental group meetings.

· Participate in vendor demonstrations and educational sessions when possible.

· Some travel to local sites and remote sites (within US) may be required.

· Provide feedback to executive team and department managers on where improvements can be made to improve quality, reduce bottlenecks and improve efficiency within the process.

Summary of Essential Job Functions (BE):

· Maintain broad exposure to industry product solutions for audio reinforcement, microphones, audio and video conferencing, video routing and distribution, IT/networking, control systems and equipment storage.

· Once assigned as the lead engineer, conduct internal kick-off meeting with SE and salesperson to gather information and document unknowns.

· Create documentation package consistent with needs of the project manager and hours sold. This would include cover pages, key plans, device floor plans and RCP’s, electrical and conduit floor plans and RCP’s, speaker dispersions, viewing distance (DISCAS), projector throw distances, camera FOV, conduit riser, elevations and sections, rack elevations, plate details, signal flows, power calculations and tables, EDID plans and other required details.

· Ability to navigate and understand architectural drawing packages to understand how AV systems integrate into the environment.

· Coordinate and document Dante Controller crosspoints.

· Coordinate and document IP video encoder/decoder routing crosspoints.

· Create cable pull schedules.

· Create network schedule in conjunction with project manager and owner representation.

· Private AV IT networking design from isolated control networks to Layer 3 managed network leveraging VLANs, multicast and customer uplinks.
