Job description

The Office of the Governor of Connecticut is currently hiring a Deputy Press Secretary in Hartford, CT. This is an executive level position reporting to the Governor's Office Greater Communications Team.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The person in this role will collaborate with the greater communications team in a fast-paced environment to proactively highlight the administration’s accomplishments and policy agenda. This position will also work closely with other departments within the office, like constituent services, legislative, policy, and operations.

This position will contribute to daily operations in the office including:
  • Drafting briefing memos and talking points for the Governor
  • Staffing the Governor at public events
  • Working with all members of the communications team to develop messaging and communication strategies that align with the Governor’s priorities and tone
  • Help develop the office’s digital and social media strategy

This is a unique position as no two days are ever the same and requires someone who is entrepreneurial and highly creative. Ability to work well with others, willingness to take initiative, manage competing priorities, and turn around high-quality products under tight deadlines are a must.

POSITION DETAILS:
  • Full-Time, 40 hours/week
  • On-site at the State Capitol building
  • First Shift
  • Weekend work and unpredictable hours required
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Appointed by the Governor in accordance with the provisions of Sections 3-1 and 5-198 (10) and (18) of the Connecticut General Statutes.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, serves as an assistant in a wide variety of administrative, staff or liaison functions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 3 years of experience working on a communications team or in the public sector
  • Experience with digital and social media management
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills, including experience writing succinct talking points, briefing memos, social media content, and other materials, and experience translating complex issues and topics
  • Experience establishing long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them
  • Experience speaking to and interacting with the news media
  • Experience with project and time management
  • Experience working in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment
  • Experience working for extended periods of time without much instruction
  • Experience prioritizing tasks and determining what is most important in a busy day-to-day environment
  • Strong sense of professionalism
  • Passion for public service and improving the State of Connecticut for our residents
