Summary:

This position is responsible for day-to-day operation as it relates to Car Shop running repairs and periodic inspections and/or Support Shop operations of components of all rolling stock in the Maintenance of Equipment Department. This includes directing a 7 day, 24-hour operation at HMC. The major objective is to supply the necessary rolling stock and/or components to maintain on-time performance in accordance with the Transportation Department timetable requirements.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

-Provide leadership/direct Master Mechanic and General Foreman on MU maintenance procedures, along with mandated requirements of FRA/AAR.

-Assess daily inspections and running repairs in addition to the evaluation of safety requirements for the MU equipment. 

-Assist General ManagerFleet Support in interdepartmental and corporate planning.

activities involving change to MU operation. This includes working with outside agencies on specific planning projects.

-Administer departmental and corporate policy to staff and personnel.

-Maintain effective line of communication with CMO, General Manager, Deputy General Manager and Transportation Department managers, to ensure that all MU operations are performed constantly in accordance with corporate and mandated policies and programs.

-Select, develop and motivate personnel within the department. Provide career development for subordinates. Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling. Responsible for discipline/termination of employees when necessary. Review direct reports and approve performance appraisals. Promote safe work practices and provide safe working conditions. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.

-Ensure safety standards are followed and prioritized how they affect our employees’ and customers’ safety. Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures. Lead by example.

-Serve as senior staff member of the MofE Department. Ensure that department/company policies are administered in a fair and equitable manner.

-Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.

Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial) or related field of study. Demonstrated, directly related experience (a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible, industrial operations experience) and education may be considered in lieu of a degree subject to approval.

-Must possess extensive rail/train operations experience coupled with technical expertise in diesel-hauled and MU (multiple unit) car operations.

-Must possess progressively responsible, related experience with a proven track record of successfully coordinating equipment operations activities and interfacing with the operating departments.

-Must possess knowledge of operating rules and technical expertise in MU car operations

-Must possess a sound administrative background including experience handling personnel and labor matters, as well as implementing and administering company policies and procedures.

-Must possess knowledge and working experience with various labor agreements.

-Must possess working knowledge relevant FRA/AAR rules and procedures.

-Must possess project and budget management experience including planning, decision making and analytical skills.

-Must be able to demonstrative effective communication skills (oral/written/interpersonal).

-Must possess demonstrated sound judgment skills with a high level of integrity and proven leadership capabilities.

Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications: 

-Extensive knowledge of LIRR Fleet vehicles and facilities.

-Detailed knowledge of LIRR labor agreements.

-Detailed understanding of roles and responsibilities of LIRR MofE management positions.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than 10 sick days in two of last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance.  Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
