Deputy Fire Chief

The City of Ottumwa is searching for our next Deputy Fire Chief! The Deputy Fire Chief assists with planning, organizing, coordinating and managing the staff and operations of the Fire Department including suppression and prevention operations, safety and training, emergency medical services, quality control and fleet management.

The Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for performing diverse, specialized and complex work involving significant accountability and decision-making responsibilities, which include division budget administration, program evaluation, and recommendation and implementation of policies, procedures, goals, objectives, priorities, and standards related to the City's fire operations and services. Incumbents serve as a professional-level resource for organizational, managerial, and operational analyses and studies. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative, and discretion within broad guidelines.

TRAINING/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D.

AND

• Ten (10) years of firefighting experience

AND

• Five (5) years of demonstrated leadership in supervisory positions with career development as a chief officer preferred

OR

• An equivalent combination of education/training and experiences which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

• Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Fire Officer I, Iowa EMT, EMS, Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, Incident Command and Hazardous Materials Technician certifications required;
• Fire Inspector I and Fire Investigator I certification
  • Required within 2 years of appointment
• Fire Officer II
  • Required within 3 years of appointment
• Valid driver’s license
• Candidate’s successful completion of the Executive Fire Officer Program offered by the National Fire Academy, and or Chief Fire Officer Designation preferred.

(This position falls under Iowa Code 400 - Civil Service. In order to qualify for consideration for the position, a candidate must complete an Assessment Center and be placed on an Eligibility List.)

that must be completed prior to April 24, 2024.

ASSESSMENT CENTER DATE FOR QUALIFYING APPLICANTS: April 29, 2024 - (Presentation Exercise, Tactical Exercise, Panel Interview)

To be considered for the position, candidates must participate on-site in the Assessment Center.
