The Job
This recruitment is only open to current County of San Bernardino, Fire Department, or Special District employees who hold a regular, intern, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, or Work Experience Program (WEX) position. Former PSE, WEX, or interns are eligible to apply up to 6 months from the end of their assignment.
The Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Deputy Director, who will plan, direct, organize and manage through subordinate managers, supervisors and staff, the administrative and operational activities of the Special Districts Division. This position is in the Unclassified Service and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.
The Special Districts Division works to promote the safety, health and enrichment of communities in the unincorporated areas of the County by providing essential municipal services along with diverse community-based programs in an efficient and sustainable manner. Special Districts covers a number of service areas, providing water and sanitation, television, parks and recreation, roads, streetlight, and other services, as well as conservation and land use assistance.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Availability: Employees are on-call as necessary and will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical: This position requires occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds as well as frequent walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, and climbing.
Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing transportation.
Minimum Requirements
Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Civil Engineering or other related discipline.
Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the management and supervision of professional and technical personnel involved in Public Works projects, from planning through design, and the construction and maintenance of Public Works facilities. Candidates must have at least one (1) year of qualifying management level experience as above.
Degree Note: Any qualifying degree/coursework obtained outside the United States must be accompanied by an equivalency report from an accredited credential evaluation service.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have extensive and highly responsible experience as a leader within an organization, having worked on a wide variety of Public Works projects. Additionally, this candidate will have a minimum of seven years of increasing responsibility for determining and managing budgets, prioritizing projects, and contributing to the ability to manage any future division that may be created as part of a reorganization of the Department. Possessing a Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering in the State of California is ideal for this position.
