The City of Biddeford greatly values employee wellness and work/life balance. Many of our positions, including all positions in City Hall, have a four-day, 36 hour work week (Fridays off!) with flexible scheduling and remote opportunities one day per week.

This position is of an administrative nature, supporting the planning and directing of the overall municipal recreation programs including After School and Camp Programs, Youth, Adult and Senior Programs, and oversight of the waterfront supervision during the summer. We are looking for a seasoned recreation professional who can positively manage a dynamic team of program coordinators and bring the department to a new level of management.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate information regarding programs to the public, as well as handling correspondence and communication with individuals seeking information.
  • Manage all recruitment and training of personnel, including volunteers, for executing the various programs; supervisory and performance management work regarding all Recreation employee
  • Create all departmental policies and procedures for approval by the Recreation Director
  • Assist in the management of the financial operation of the department along with the Director, including preparation of budgets and monitoring expenditures and revenues
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources Department for payroll, personnel matters, recruitment advertising, employee selection, orientation, training, and worker’s compensation related matters;
  • Handle all employee issues including investigations and disciplinary issues
  • Respond to citizens and parents regarding inquiries and complaints relative to recreation programs
  • Prepare correspondences, communications, and reports pertaining to the recreation department
  • Promote interest and provide information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public
  • Create and implement a department-wide training program for all staff and volunteers
  • Create and implement a retention program with the assistance of the HR Department
  • Supervise the scheduling of all outside activities at the Community Center and on City athletic fields and parks, coordinating with coaches, Athletic Directors, and the Recreation Department

Preferred Qualifications

  • A four-year degree in Recreational Management or relevant field
  • At least two years’ experience and training in public recreation and administration
  • At least two years’ experience in a supervisory role
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)
