Job Summary:
This position is required and defined by state statute. The Deputy may assist the Township Clerk in the performance of the Township Clerk’s duties required by the Constitution and the statute. In case of absence, sickness, death, or other disability of the Clerk, the Deputy shall possess the powers and perform the duties of the Clerk, except the Deputy shall not have a vote on the Township Board. Under the general direction of the Township Clerk, the Deputy provides policy and program support to the Clerk. Represents the Clerk to constituents, outside agencies, and governmental units, and serves as the Clerk in that person’s absence. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or personal information. Serves as part of the Township team, working in partnership with the Supervisor, Treasurer, Trustees, Manager (Chief Administrative Officer) and other staff.
Duties: The Deputy Clerk may assist the Clerk in performing any of the Clerk’s duties which include maintaining the financial accounting of Township funds, protecting and keeping most Township’s records, and maintaining the voter rolls and administering elections.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
This is an appointed position required by statute, selected by the Clerk. There are no requirements, other than being bondable. However, the following qualifications are desirable and may serve as a guideline for selection.
1. Required is a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or related fields. Preferably, a master’s degree in accounting, library/information science, public policy/administration, or related field.
2. Experience working in the public sector, or otherwise demonstrated commitment to public service.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and use good judgement when dealing with the public, colleagues, elected officials, other governmental and regulatory agencies.
4. Ability to convey and understand information effectively and promptly through speaking, hearing, reading, and writing.
5. Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, and work effectively within deadlines, and changing work priorities.
6. Dedication to ongoing professional development, and willingness to attain required certifications (election administration) and licenses (notary public).
