Position Summary:

The Online based Bachelor of Arts in Criminology program in the College of Undergraduate Studies has an opening for a Department Faculty with expertise in the fields of criminology and/or criminal justice. The position can start as early as the Summer 1 term (May 6, 2024).

The Criminology department seeks a dynamic individual who is committed to intrusive student success initiatives to teach core undergraduate courses in criminal justice and criminology. The ideal candidate has strong online teaching skills and course development skills. The ideal candidate also has a proven and strong commitment to student engagement and retention, as well as to diversity, inclusion, and equity.

The Department Faculty is a full-time faculty member who reports to the Department Chair of the BA Criminology program and works closely with the college’s academic administrators, academic advising staff, administrative staff, and faculty. While Department Faculty members are fundamentally responsible for teaching in accordance with The Chicago School’s workload policy, adjustments to an individual's teaching load may be made by the Department Chair based on program needs first and individual talents and abilities second. Department Faculty members are recommended to the Dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies for hire by the Department Chair.

Principal Duties:

  • Teaching
    • Teach 18 credit hours over the course of six terms
    • Hold office hours on a weekly basis
    • Remain current in field of study/teaching expertise and update course content to reflect knowledge updates
    • Prepare course syllabi and plans in accord with Department requirements
    • Select textbooks and teaching aids as required
    • Classroom instruction including lectures, demonstrations, discussions, or other appropriate modes of education delivery in a higher education setting
    • Provide students with ongoing, timely feedback regarding their attainment of course and program competencies
  • Advising
    • Maintain an advisee load according to Department needs
    • Spend time with advisees to provide mentorship on matters related to their academic, curricular, and career development
    • Assist the Department Chair in documenting student progress through the program; when necessary; this includes crafting individual Academic Development Plans for Advisees, tracking their compliance, and documenting their progress
  • Service
    • Attend Faculty Council meetings and serve on a Faculty Council committee
    • Serve on academic and co-curricular committees, as needed
    • Attend departmental meetings
    • Lead and/or host student club meetings, events, and open houses
    • Lead professional development sessions for undergraduate faculty
  • Program and Course Assessment and Development
    • Participate in departmental curriculum reviews and propose revisions to courses and programs based on data analysis and student feedback
    • Update course learning objectives with program learning objectives
    • Develop signature assignments that align with program learning objectives
    • Mentor subject matter experts (SMEs) and adjuncts on course revisions
    • Serve as a course lead to oversee updates for courses

Travel Requirements:

  • This is a remote position. Some travel may be required.
  • Preference for someone residing in the Chicago metro or D.C./Maryland/Virginia metro areas to visit the Chicago or D.C. campus 4-6 times per year.

Position Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in criminology or related field is required.
  • Expertise in the criminal justice system and education.
  • Experience facilitating courses in diverse modalities
  • Record of intellectual and professional contribution/scholarship to the field.
  • Record of success in student retention, advising, and mentoring, including with non-traditional learners.
  • Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students in distance learning environments.
  • Commitment to applied research and the development of community relationships for students and faculty.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, team-building, and human relations skills.
  • Experience with data-based decision making in academic environments.
  • Work in a team-oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration and personal accountability.
  • Evidence of compatibility with The Chicago School’s mission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctorate degree in criminology or related field is preferred.
  • Prior online teaching experience.
  • Experience in course development and evaluation.
  • Experience with adult learners, part-time students, and diverse learning styles.
  • Reside in the Chicago or D.C./Maryland/Virginia metro area to be able to visit one of our campuses 4-6 times per year.

Compensation & BenefitsThis opportunity is budgeted at $75,000-80,000 base compensation. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
