Berkeley City College (BCC), one of California's 112 community colleges, is centrally located in downtown Berkeley, only 1-1/2 blocks from the U.C. campus. The Dean of Counseling and Student Equity, under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Student Services, is responsible for the development, direction, supervision, fiscal management and evaluation of the following programs and services: Counseling (instruction and services), SEA, Career/Transfer, Society of Scholars, Umoja, the Puente Project, Undocumented Community Resource Center (UCRC), AANAPISI, Conocimiento Los Caminos, EOPS/CARE, CalWORKs, Student Accessibility Services, and NextUp, course and program articulation.

  • Works with faculty, staff and administrators to oversee a range of equity related professional development to provide greater cultural awareness of student needs and best practices for meeting varying learning style
  • Provides supervision and guidance for counselors, equity focused learning communities included but not limited to the following programs and services to address the disproportionality of access and success of identified student groups: UMOJA, API Lead/AANAPISI, Puente/CLC, Undocumented Community Resource Center, Supervise program faculty, classified professionals, and Student mentorsworkers.
  • Supervise EOPS/CARE, NextUP
  • Collaborates with enrollment services on campus (Admissions and Records and Financial Aid) to ensure each program is working towards meeting the equity goals of the college
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, faculty and staff in student services programs to plan and coordinate the District-wide effort for student success
  • Serves as a resource for Guided Pathways including Academic and Career Communities and leadership to ensure DEIAA are a focus throughout the college to achieve equity goals
  • Serves on standing and ad hoc committees as required.
  • Assists in the development of appropriate student services component evaluative methodology, research, statistical reports, and other outcome measurements to assess effectiveness, accomplishments, future needs, and in consultation with institutional planning and instruction.
  • Monitors MIS reporting, reports to college and state regarding Equity Plan.
  • Writes DEIA focused grant proposals and administers special projects that support the student access, success, and retention goals of the College.
  • Represents the College in local, regional, and statewide meetings and committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student
    Services.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a Master's Degree from an accredited college or
university.
2. One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience
reasonably related to the administrator's administrative assignment.
3. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to
and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty,
and Students
Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the operation and use of personal computers utilizing office productivity software applications (i.e., work processing, spreadsheet and database management software) including the internet.
  • Skill in budget development, maintenance, and reporting related to general fund, grants, and other externally-funded resources.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, including public speaking and complex reports.
  • Skill in training, direct, supervising and evaluating the work of others.
  • Skill in team building and coordination of departments to ensure continuous program improvement
  • Skill in developing campus and community partnerships
  • Commitment to Participatory Governance.
  • Effective organization, communication and public relations skills

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees must satisfy all pre-employment requirements to work for the District which include, but are not limited to, the following items:
REQUIRED FOR ALL EMPLOYEES
Tuberculosis Examination: Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to submit evidence (either skin test or X-ray report) of being free of tuberculosis within the past sixty (60) days. The TB test is a condition of employment and any expense must be borne by the successful candidate.
Fingerprinting Requirement:
As a condition of employment, all employees working for community colleges in the State of California are required to be fingerprinted within the first ten (10) working days of the date of employment pursuant to Education Code Section 88024. The District Office of Human Resources processes fingerprints electronically. During the employment intake process, new employees will be given information to have their fingerprints taken at another location.
Immigration Requirement: According to the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Peralta Community College District is required to verify that all new employees are:
1) A citizen or national of the United States;
2) An alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or
3) An alien authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to work in the United States.
All new employees are required to complete and sign a verification form and provide documentation attesting that he/she is a United States citizen, national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
District Policy: A Social Security Card will be required following selection and prior to completion of the hiring process. The employment process cannot be completed without a copy of the Social Security Card on file in the Office of Human Resources.
